Mountain Biking Mt Victoria

****   Add a review
#59 of 387 mountain bike trails in New Zealand
#5,586 in the world

Mt Victoria is a great place to ride close to the city. You can be in the midst of the action within 5 minutes of the CBD. Mt Vic offers all year round riding options that are great for a lunchtime ride or for a quick night ride after work.
Mt Vic is flush with wide walking paths (easy) and rooty single track (easy to intermediate). To connect to both sides you're likely to have to ride up, or down, Alexandra Rd at some stage.
The paths are all dual use so they are likely to be used by walkers, runners and dog owners. Please ride a little conservatively if you are out there at peak times.

Cross-Country Riding
Most of the good cross country rides run between the lookout at Oriental Bay and the Newtown end of the reserve (parallel to the main walkways). Once you've explored a bit, you'll easily put together a fun 6-8 km loop with lots of alternatives.

Down Hill
There are some decent downhill options running from the Hataitai Park side towards town. Many of these runs cut across the main walkways so down-hillers please take care at the points where runs cross main walkways. Conflict between riders and walkers could cause the council to rethink their access policy.

Getting there
From central Wellington on the Quay, ride south toward Te Papa. Go past Te Papa down Cable Street and turn right onto Kent Terrace, toward the YHA Wellington City Hostel. Turn left onto Majoribanks Street. The street will end veering right into a carpark. There is a track at the end of the carpark where you can enter the Mt Victoria trail system.

Great park but not as great for beginners. There is a lot of roots and slippery turns that makes for a fun exciting ride. there are some fun drops and jumps scatter around in every trail.

Parts of this trail are excellent but I had some difficulty following it despite lots of signs showing the way. You only have to miss one! The best way to explore Mount Victoria is just to follow your nose.

    Reviewing Mt Vic Easy:

The Mount Victoria trails are well worth exploring if you're ever in Wellington but the Makara Peak trails are better.

    Reviewing Mt Vic Skills Area:

I enjoyed a brief play in this area. The wooden drop off jumps were great at three different heights.

    Reviewing Shuttlecock:

It's a short and sweet grade 4 downhill trail. You wouldn't go out of your way for it but it's not bad.

    Reviewing Mt Vic Easy:

Mount Vic Easy is generally wide with a good surface but it's very undulating and quite steep it places. It's also easy to lose it! Don't worry - you'll probably find it again if you just keep going.

Fun and incredibly easy to get to as it right in the middle of the city. Enjoyable twisting runs between trees but a little too short.

Mt Victoria was literally right outside my window. It was raining for nearly a week, but I just had to test the place out. It's only a 5-ish minute ride from the YHA, climbing up a hill. But it's honestly the easiest track system to get to in Wellington, smack in the middle of the city.
The tracks are of packed dirt, exposed rock, lots and lots of tree roots, and pine needles (for fall and winter). Cause of all the rain it was very slippery. I feel a couple of times...yep. That was the only issue. Otherwise, the area isn't too technical and should be very nice on a good weathered week.
Even through the place isn't that large the winding trails were fun to go through. I ended up spending 4 hours riding around, taking photos, and enjoying the view down from the peak! Loved the views.
The place has tracks for every skill level, beginner (skills area) to advanced. Something for everyone. So everyone should, even if it's just a lunch break from work, just grab their bike and head out to Mt Vic for a nice ride.
