Sicily is an island full of strong contrasts:
- A land rich in history and culture
- Ancient fishermen’s villages
- Natural wonders
- Beaches and islands where you can relax surrounded by waters.
The island is a crossroads for populations who were different from each other, who have all left permanent traces of themselves in the island’s culture.
Top 5 Activities to Do:
1° A walk on Syracuse’s Ortygia Island: Classical ruins rub elbows with faded seaside palaces and fish markets in Sicily's most beautiful port city, whose Dome is built on the columns of an ancient Greek temple.
2° The palaces, churches, and crypts of Palermo: Almost every great European empire once ruled Sicily's strategically positioned capital, and it shows through most of all in the diverse architecture, from Roman to Byzantine to Arab-Norman.
3° The Valley of the Temples, Agrigento: This stunning set of ruins is proudly perched above the sea in a grove full of almond trees; not even in Athens will you find Greek temples this finely preserved.
4° Taormina's Teatro Greco: Watch a Greek tragedy in the amphitheatre where it was performed two millennia ago -- -in the shadow of smoking Mount Etna.
5° Hiking and Cycling: Many small travel firms organize trips for hiking or biking your way around certain parts of Sicily. The typical trip would focus on a specific region. Favorites are the Madonie or Nebrodi mountains and Mount Etna.
Mount Etna in the Sicily's greatest natural attraction is also its highest mountain. To the ancient Greeks, Mount Etna was the Vulcan, god of fire, and the home of the one-eyed monster known as the Cyclops. At nearly 3350 meters, it is Europe's highest active volcano.
Top Mountain Bike Itineraries:
- Trans-Sicily: Off-road traversing from Cefalu to Catania. Crosswise through the natural parks of Madonie, along the main comb of the Mount Nebrodi and in an altitude of 1400-2200 m around the volcano Etna (approx. 360 km and 6000 am, 5-6 days).
- Beach holydays and mountain biking: From the middle-age town Cefalu rises a closely wooded mountain massif up to 1900 meters. Since 1998 the beautiful mountains are protected as a natural park - the Parco delle Madonie. In the highest part of the Sicily Apennine you will find lovely mountain villages and unforgettable views.
- Typically created for mountain biking are the many forest roads and trails are in the Parco dei Nebrodi. This animal and water-rich nature park on the north coast of Sicily reached a height of 1600 m. To the volcano Mount Etna and the Lipari islands.
To see most of Sicily's highlights, plan to spending at least 5 to 7 days and moving a few times. Everything is spread out -- Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean, 177km (110 miles) north to south and 281km (175 miles) wide. Taormina, the most popular resort, is a great place to relax and play in the sun for a couple of days; from here you can also visit Mount Etna.
The town is isolated in the east, however, so it may not be the best base for seeing the island's other highlights. The quickest and most efficient way to see most of Sicily is to fly into Palermo, rent-a-car, and travel east to Taormina; then return your car and fly back to the mainland from Catania. (Conversely, you can fly into Catania, perhaps from Rome, and end your itinerary in Palermo, returning the car there before flying back to Rome.)
