At Muckmedden we don’t follow the obvious path when it comes to our events. We like to do things a bit differently, so that could explain why we decided to organise a family-friendly Enduro in Scotland’s Central Belt at the end of November.
Last year we were treated to a crisp, sunny day, blue skies and snow capped hills in the distance, and we enjoyed hot chocolate and warm Burrittos by the fire. So come on, get that winter clobber on and let's hit the trails!
Once again we kick things off with the Wee Muckers. Back by popular demand we have a fully-fledged chip-timed (just like the big race!) multi-stage Enduro for riders aged 6 to 11 years old and Trail Tots will be doing their thing in the bike park for under 6 pedallers and non-pedallers with races and open sessions from 10am.
For riders aged 12 and over we have a choice of day & night Enduro racing, a ton of demo bikes to try out, delicious food and drink and a lot of cosy Swedish Candles dotted around the place to warm your cockles on.
Welcome to Falkirk Funduro!
The VenueThe event takes place at Callendar Estate, Falkirk on Saturday 26th November. If you haven’t been lucky enough to visit Callendar Estate yet, this place has an enviable network of novice-friendly, all-weather mountain bike trails ranging from easy Greens to more demanding Blue and Red trails.
The trails are perfect for a night ride, not too scary and top fun. Callendar Estate is also one of the best places in Scotland to take the kids on their very first singletrack adventure, so we’re sorted for fun, friendly trails.
Callendar Estate have also recently installed some gnarlier trails to appeal to “real” mountain bikers, a bike park suitable for all levels of rider, a bike shop boasting a full fleet of top end bikes to hire or buy and an on-site restaurant offering panoramic views and everything from melt-in-the-mouth steak to home-made tray bakes and freshly ground coffee.
Sounds good already doesn’t it? If possibly a bit cold.
What to expectAs this is a Muckmedden event you can expect a bunch of fun trails offering a variety of flow and challenging-but-achievable technicality. You can expect it to be a fairly decent pedal (even more so if you do the Day and Night stages) but it won’t be the most soul-destroyingly tough race you’ve ever done. It will be cold though.
If you’re a parent you’ll be able to chaperone your son/daughter on their first proper multi-stage Enduro adventure and every single rider will enjoy the unbeatable, laid-back Muckmedden vibe, an encouraging atmosphere and friendly banter. But most importantly you’ll finish each stage feeling like an MTB God(ess) wishing you could do it all again.
Which of course you can……in the dark*! *Over 12's only
Under 6 years old
Trail Tots will be running Balance Bike and Pedal Bike racing on the awesome Collective Trax-designed bike park at Greenrig.
6 to 11 years old
We will be running a “Mini Funduro” with three timed, green-graded stages (plus a 4th gnarlier stage for 8's and over). Kid’s will have a timing “dibber” on their wrist and parents are encouraged to chaperone younger riders around the course.
Duration: 2 to 5 mins per stage
3km in total approx.
Age 12 and over
Riders aged 12+ can enter the main “Falkirk Funduro” with the option of a “Day Only” race entry or a “Day & Night” race entry.
“Day Only” riders will complete four timed stages ranging from Blue to Red grade during daylight hours. “Day & Night” riders will complete the same timed stages as “Day Only” riders and then strap on the lights and race them again at night. Amazing fun! Younger riders (ages 12 – 15) will be issued with their own timing “dibber”. Parents/Guardians may chaperone under 16’s around the course during night stages (or get approval from a qualified coach vouching for the young rider’s ability).
Duration: 1hr – 3hrs Day/1hr – 3hrs Night
30km max – Day & Night
Did we mention it might be a bit chilly?
GETTING THERE:
Option 1 (Falkirk Wheel) - You can park at the Falkirk Wheel and cycle up to the event village at Greenrig if you don't mind a fairly easy 2.5km ride/walk. There are plenty of parking spaces and this option has the added advantage that the Falkirk Wheel is clearly signposted from the M9. You also get to see the amazing feet of engineering that is the Falkirk Wheel along the way, which is well worth a visit if you’ve never been before.
Option 2 (Bantaskine) - If you are familiar with the area you can also park at Bantaskine which is 1.5km from the event village. For the event village follow signs to Greenrig.
Option 3 (Greenrig) - If you wish to park nearer the event village, parking is also available on the estate road just along from Greenrig car park (FK1 3AQ on a GPS). From the B8028 in Falkirk, turn onto Slamannan Road at the traffic lights and continue SA until you reach a roundabout, take the fourth exit onto Lochgreen Road and continue SA until you see two large, modern wooden buildings on the RHS. Follow the yellow signs for “Car Park” and an attendant will be on hand to direct you to a safe parking place. *NOTE: Please park as instructed as parking on some sections of verge may result in your vehicle being stuck. There is £2 charge per vehicle for on-site parking (which includes overnight stay in a camper if you wish). This money goes to Bespoke Community Development Company for the up-keep and development of the Callendar Estate Cycle Trails network. Without these guys, this event would not be possible so hopefully you won't begrudge paying the £2. They have also promised to tow you out if you happen to get stuck! ;-)
