Mountain Biking Jim Thompson

****   Add a review
#301 of 422 mountain bike trails in Arizona
#9388 in the world

This trail is best ridden west to east unless you like a serious climb. Either way, you'll be treated to some great scenery. Much of the trail is wide and covered with loose rocks. Where it narrows to true singltrack, it's really good. If traveleing from west to east, the descent into Wilson Canyon is a real scream. This trail can be combined with the north Sedona trail complex (Thunder Mountain/Teacup/Jordan) and Huckaby (cross 89a under Midgley Bridge) for a real epic.

1 for riding this one West to East. I also recommend combining this with Huckaby for a good loop, although this direction will required some hike-a-bike on Huckaby. For a great loop, start with the Sedona North Urban Trail Systems (West then East), proceed to Jim Thompson, then Huckaby and loop back on city streets. This isn't the first trail to hit in Sedona, but well worth a trip if you've already done Llama, Templeton and the far NW complex (Chuckwagon/Aerie/Mescal, etc).

Definitely not a trail for beginners. Makes a GREAT hiking trail, though. We had to walk our bikes over a fair portion, and its mostly uphill (we went W to E).

Starting at the Jordan Road trailhead makes this a painless ride with a long and fun descent. Although coming back up the trail is totally doable, if the weather is hot or you're getting tired, an alternative is to rip downhill on Hwy 89A and ride back up Jordan Road.

Its possible to ride this trail as loop by utilizing the Huckaby tr also. I left my vehicle at the Huckaby trailhead on Schnebly Hill rd, riding down the road, through town and up Jordan rd to the Jim Thompson trailhead (3 miles total). The road riding was ok but if I ever do this again I would most definitely ride it in the reverse direction (counter clockwise). ********************
Riding this trail from W to E it’s a bit sandy to begin with but then turns into a nice wide track trail with sweeping corners and great views. It’s a gradual climb up for more than 2 miles, some rock gardens and a few step-ups that would have been drops coming down. A mile into it I couldn’t help but think that it would be very fast & fun riding the other direction. The trail then dropped down to a dry creek bed and out to the hwy all in about .5 mile.
I picked up the start of the Huckaby tr underneath the bridge.
