15 New Mountain Bike Trails that Opened in September, 2020

Try to keep up! The newest mountain bike trails from around the world.

Everyone loves new trail day. For trail builders and advocates, a trail opening represents the culmination of years — and in many cases decades — of hard work. For mountain bikers, new trail day is a bit like celebrating a birthday, complete with new singletrack gifts to enjoy.

This month we tracked 15 new mountain bike trails that were officially opened to the public. With this bunch we’re seeing a trend toward adding pump tracks, jump lines, and skills areas to existing parks and trail systems to encourage even more young and beginning riders to take up mountain biking.

Blue Steel (Bellingham, Washington): The Blue Steel trail is a jump trail with some seriously big features sure to keep even the most progressive riders on their toes and working toward their next move. Built in association with the folks at Transition Bikes, this new trail adds to the already impressive Galbraith Mountain trail network.

Stevie Smith Bike Park (Nanaimo, British Columbia) A Velosolutions-designed pump track and skills area was added to the Stevie Smith Bike Park in BC recently. The park is named for professional downhill mountain bike racer Steve Smith, a Nanaimo local who died following a motorcycle crash in 2016.

McClellan (Anniston, Alabama): The trails at McClellan were first featured in our new trails roundup in June, 2019 and this month the system doubled in length from five to ten miles of singletrack.

Lake Druid MTB Park (Orlando, Florida): The Lake Druid mountain bike park in Orlando added a new trail on the north side of the park complete with wooden features and berms.

Northside Park (Norfolk, Virginia): Bike Norfolk, along with volunteers and corporate supporters like REI, added 2.2 miles of quality singletrack to this 62-acre park.

Huron County Nature Center (Port Austin, Michigan): A 3.7-mile directional loop recently opened at the Huron County Nature Center, with more singletrack trails planned to be added in the future.

Pinnacle Mountain Monument Trails (Little Rock, Arkansas): Arkansas continues to show off its trail building muscle, this time completely rebuilding the Jackfork Trail and adding a dozen new miles of singletrack to create the Pinnacle Mountain Monument Trails. And to no one’s surprise, there are plans are to add even more trails to the State Park in the future.

Santa Clarita Sports Complex (Santa Clarita, California): In addition to a limited amount of singletrack, the Santa Clarita Sports complex now offers a pump track, jump line, and mountain bike skills area for local riders to practice.

Big Creek Park (Chardon, Ohio): Located in the broader Geauga Park District, Big Creek Park added a 2-mile+ mountain bike loop, the first designated bike trail in the park.

Howie Roll (Gorham, New Hampshire): Howie Roll is named in honor of longtime volunteer Howie Wemyss and adds to the selection of singletrack mountain bike trails in and around Gorham.

Rend Lake Mountain Bike Trail (Benton, Illinois): This 6-mile mountain bike trail is located on Army Corps of Engineers land along the shore of Rend Lake. The first phase, which officially opened this month, features beginner-friendly trails. Plans include up to 12 miles of singletrack.

Wilkins Branch Mountain Bike Park (Franklin, Tennessee): Mountain bikers who live in this suburb of Nashville now have four miles of trails to enjoy at Wilkins Branch, with trails designated for beginners to experts.

Riverview Forest Park (Coquitlam, British Columbia): Mountain bikers have been riding the trails at Riverview Forest Park for a while, and the park recently added a new flow track and improved signage.

Haw Ridge (Oak Ridge, Tennessee): Haw Ridge is another trail system that recently added a skills area (called the Dirtlab) and pump track to what was already known to be one of the best places to ride in the area.

Dial Range Trails (Penguin, Tasmania) The Dial Range trail system just opened the Iron Tor and Ironcliffe Ridge trails, with separate climbing and descending tracks.
