After breakfast we headed into town and hit up Blackwater Mountain Bike Outfitters. They got us the stuff we needed to get ZED back in the game. Time to hit the trails. We got back to the campsite and hit the CVI trail system.

On the way up I noticed that I was running really low in my rear tire. So we stopped and I tried to put some air in my tire with my portable tire pump. It was broken. Now my tire was dangerously low and I blew out my tubless.

Put a tube in it. Back on the trail. After some riding I lost track of Drew and spent the better part of an hour back tracking and looking for him. So I headed back to the campsite. He had managed to break a handful of spokes and after looking at my watch I realized that the bike shop is closed by now. So we decided to get to bed early, get up, get the wheel fixed then hit up Timberline resort and try our hands in downhill.

How I found Drew at the Campsite.

To give you an idea of what we were about to get ourselves into at timberline, this is my bike. I love it for XC and trail riding but I had no idea how it would handle some downhill.
    Image

Upon arriving at Timberline we were quickly met with strange looks an questions about weather or not we had pads and full face helmets. I was determined. so we paid for our lift tickets and made our way to top of the hill.

We got the top and went down what we thought was Doc’s but turned out to be one of the service roads down.

After that we had lunch, a drink to curb the pain, and we headed home. I had an incredible time. I’ve been so busy at work and school that even when things don’t go perfect, its still nice to be out in nature with some old friends. Davis is a must see if your an east coast rider. I still haven’t hit all the trails in the area and will be making my way back sometime soon.

This is the where we spent most of the first 24 hours ensuring we had hangovers the next morning. We couldn’t get on the trail that night because the bike I was lending Drew need to visit the shop and we arrived in Davis pretty late.

This is almost the whole campsite.

Honestly I don’t really know. There was a small(maybe 4") drop off the outside of the turn. But I don’t remember going into it and if I did it was just a little bit. Basically no idea.

So that night we licked our wounds and took her easy. Camp fire and beers, burgers and hotdogs. We played a fun game of taboo and hit the rack.

Next day took the walk of shame back to the bike shop. Returned the broken rental and finished packing.

    One more pic for CVI.

All and all, well worth it. WV singletrack is sick. Just make sure you come prepared cuz these trails will eat up the un prepared rider. Can’t wait to the next trip out to Davis.

First stop in town was Blackwater Bikes. Tim was holding down the fort. We dropped off the bikes and he started doing his thing. While he worked feverishly on both of my bikes we headed across the street to Hellbenders. Killer Burritos! We grabbed a few beers and picked our bikes. I had to rent a bike Because they were out of stock of my RD hanger. Lesson learned!! I rented a Cannondale hardtail 29er and off we rode. we decided that the first stop would be CVI. The rental felt a little loose but I didn’t say anything. We started the outer loop cw. EPIC!!

The ride started with a mellow gradual climb which got progressively steeper and more technical. The wilderness was beautiful and the climbing put a good burn in my legs.

The trail gets extremely technical as you roll into the Moonrocks. Then slower and tougher in Hoodoo. I knew the climbing was over when I noticed a wet paper sign stapled to a tree.

    "XXX Long Technical(although thrilling) Decent"

We started the ride down. My forearms were burning as I made my way down one of the rockiest down hill sections I’ve ever ridden. Very fun. as we made it up to the Institute we knew the decent was about half way. And we knew that the technical slow stuff was about to be replaced by sweeping flow thru open fields back to the truck. Time to fly.

As I came around a long sweeping left hand turn I felt my front wheel collapse and I went flying. No idea why.

So I left the rental with Kellen and rode back to the truck on a service rood that skirts the SE side of the property. we get in the truck and head back in. We see a pickup with Kellen in the back. We flag them down and he hops out. As the young couple pulls away they crash into a ditch. Its time to go back to the ladies.

We stayed at Abrams Creek Campground. We rented their vacation cabin. I thought it was nice but the ladies were grossed out. Breakfast was Bacon and Eggs. Then we packed the bikes and headed to Davis.

We headed over a small earth dam and onto some sick singletrack. It was getting dark so we took it easy. The trail was just starting to get good and then catastrophe.

The bad thing about this is, it happened to two of my bikes. The one I was riding and the one Kellen was riding up to see if I was okay.

There is a Brew Pub basically acroos the street from the state park. So naturally after a few miles hiking our bikes out of the woods. We carb loaded for the next day.

Slept really well that first night.

You are correct. I did mean coopers rock. Thank you all for the info. ive just gotten word that one of my buddies isn’t going to join us anymore. but the good news is that hes the only one that I was really worried about.

So we will see how it goes. I will post as much as I can.

in reply to: First Trip to West Virginia. Need Advise. #121134

Thanks for the info man. I’ve been looking into the cvi trails a lot and they seem like maybe my buddies can hack it. But, we will see.

I also looked into new river, but its a bit far, four hours. Although the video I saw makes them almost look worth the drive for my friends to get a good taste of speed.

I also watched a video of coopers ridge which is only and hour and a half that looked like some fast downhill action. Has anyone hit that up?

in reply to: Full suspension frames #114826

I have been looking really hard at the Santa Cruz superlight. But have some concerns. I can’t seem to find what size travel forks it’s designed for. Ive got a 100mm marzoochi bomber on my hardtail that I’m trying to reuse. Cuz I’m on a very slim budget. Is this a horrible buy? Or will it work out?
