Essentially current MTB racing categories – Beginning, Sport, and Expert – will become Categories 3, 2, and 1 respectively. The Pro category will remain and Semi-pro riders will have the chance to choose either Category 1 or Pro status in 2009.

One of the most interesting changes seems to address a concern held by many amateur mountain bike racers: sandbaggers. If you’ve ever raced your mountain bike you know what I’m talking about – sandbaggers are experienced riders who should really be racing in Sport or Expert classes but choose to compete as Beginners for a better shot at a podium finish. Under the new NORBA rules, after a Cat 3 rider places in the top 5 in five races he or she will automatically advance to Cat 2. Ditto for moving from Cat 2 to Cat 1. From what I understand Pro classification rules will remain the same as those outlined in the USA Cycling rule book.

The reaction from most mountain bike racers seems to be pretty positive so far. These changes have been under discussion for at least a couple of years and NORBA has been working closely with riders to make sure the transition goes smoothly.
