Cycle Progression rents bikes – I know because I was going to rent one last month from them until my plans changed and I didn’t make it to Austin. They can probably recommend what trails are worth riding as well.
I used to call it quits in November. But now I have a fat bike and lights so I don’t stop unless the trails are pure mud.
I’ve been happy with the Specialized Deflect gloves. When it’s really cold I also use Bar Mitts.
I’m loving the fat bike wheels! Hoping to talk to you about some wheels for my single speed after the first of the year.
Blanchard Springs Caverns has decent facilities. I stayed there in the spring. Check their website for more info. Also check the Syllamo Trail Cleaners Facebook page for updated trail conditions. There is a nice one mile fire road climb from the campground to the trail head that will get you warmed up.
Ugh. Hopefully the doc is wrong. I’m off the bike myself for a few weeks after a crash on a piece of trail I’ve ridden dozens of times. The thought of not trail riding for a few weeks is driving me crazy. I can’t imagine how you are feeling. Heal up fast!
I’m not from AR but I’ve ridden there several different times. Great place to be a mountain biker. Have fun.
Excellent video and music.
"Eric Foltz" wroteSo, we’re a quarter into the year. How is everyone doing on meeting their 2014 goals?
Well beyond where I thought I would be at right now. Getting a fat bike was a game changer for me. I’ve been able to get a lot of rides/miles in already. Plus I’m in much better riding shape than I normally would be at this point in the season. I should easily surpass my 1000 mile goal.
Leinenkugels Canoe Paddler. While I prefer porters & stouts Canoe Paddler is such a refreshing beer. Great post ride beer.
Like Fishboy316 suggested, I’d recommend checking your local bike shops to see if they have any bikes from the past couple of years lineups. I’ve went that route on a few of my bikes and I have bought them at a nice discount.
I would say they are similar. Someone else may spot something that jumps out at them but I didn’t. LBS – local bike shop. Having a good shop behind the bike means a lot to me.
Tough call spec wise. If I was looking at both of these bikes l think it would come down to a) how they felt after I took each one on a test ride and b) the LBS behind each bike.
I picked up a Specialized Crave not long ago. Unfortunately with all the snow we have received I haven’t put many miles on it. It’s worth checking out.

I use Strava to keep track of my miles & to find trails I didn’t know were there using the Explore feature. But I keep my phone in my bag. After I lost my cycling computer a few years ago I quickly discovered I preferred not knowing how fast I was going/how far etc while I was riding. But it’s nice to review my ride afterwards.

I sometimes have my handheld GPS with me in addition to using Strava on my phone and they rarely matchup. I usually end up with slightly more mileage from Stava.

Welcome. Don’t get addicted!

1000 miles which would be double the 500 I rode this year – all on the mountain bike, and to shave 25 minutes off my Iceman time. My wife was sick last year, so getting 500 miles in was an accomplishment in itself. Her getting better should allow me more trail time & I just bought a fat tire bike this week, so suddenly the months of December through March have opened up as prime riding time for me.(went out twice today it’s so much fun! 😃 ) I also picked up a single speed recently. Everything I’ve read says a single speed makes you a better rider. Guess I’ll find out!
November 8, 2012 at 15:35 in reply to: What got you into riding? what do you like most about riding #113604When I was a kid I lived in an area with a lot of trails and my friends and I all had BMX bikes. I always loved riding trails and when somebody gave me a Schwinn High Plains mountain bike in the mid 90s I rediscovered that love of trail riding I had as a kid. I quickly moved up to a full suspension bike, promptly got out of riding and then re-rediscovered it in 2010. Now it’s pretty much all I think about. I think the things I like most about riding include, just being outdoors, enjoying the great scenery, the exercise & challenge, even though it doesn’t seem like exercise, and that when I’m riding, everything else goes out the window – I’m concentrating on that section of trail I’m riding and not much more.
