Trail Description
About this trail
Updated description by Greg Heil:
Hangover is an incredibly technical trail, with high consequences if you mess up. With serious exposure, technical features, steep rock rolls, tight singletrack, wide-open views, and even more rocks, Hangover Trail is probably the most technical trail in Sedona... and you can't miss it! Granted, it's not for everyone, but if you're willing to get outside of your comfort zone and tackle some technical challenges, you need to ride this trail!

Review: Just a few comments on the description of this trail. 1) Gain - The summary says 2,700' vertical elevation gain and 4,700' vertical elevation loss - my garmin had it under 1,000' 2) #1 Ranking - I'm not sure if the #1 designation is implying that it is the most popular? I was there on a Saturday morning at 10am in Mid October (what you would think would be prime time) and I was literally the only mountain biker there the whole time. I saw many other hikers and guided ORV tours but no other bikers. 3) Mountain Biking? My favorite trails are Gooseberry Mesa and SlickRock in Utah (Both Expert) but Hangover is a different Sport than those trails. Maybe bike trials? In my mind for mountain biking you need some semblance of flow, which hangover does not have. That being said, it is a beautiful trail and there is nothing else like it in the world.

Review: This is the third time I've ridden this, however the first two times the trail was "unofficial" for MTB so we got a bit lost getting up to the saddle. Now that it is official it is well maintained and ridden in. Excellent and challenging for even for the Expert rider, awesome views. Beginner rider?... maybe hike it instead or just walk it in many places. Only a little way past the trail head the exposure will challenge you. Once you make it over the saddle it is mostly flat and then downhill. Views are spectacular. The west end descent is the most challenging with lots of exposure. Even as an Expert (xc) rider I walk the steepest section. This is definitely one of the "must do" trails in Sedona.... whether biking or hiking.

Review: This might be my favorite trail in the world. It recently displaced The Whole Enchilada, although the two should not be compared; they are each very different kinds of awesome. It requires your FULL attention, in the best possible way. Meditation at Gunpoint(C). :)

Review: This is easily the spookiest trail I've ever ridden. The combination of technical challenge and high consequence for failure all situated among some of the most beautiful scenery on the planet makes for a unique and moving experience. All but the top 1/10 of 1% will dismount, probably more than once, but it's so worth it. Even when entering with a good dose of confidence you will likely exit with an even bigger dose of humility. If you can keep the fear factor from overwhelming the fun factor, it's definitely a 5 star experience.

Review: Hangover is hands-down one of the hardest trails I've ever ridden, and it's also one of the most inspiring! With genius trail construction, mind-blowing views, and technical features to challenge the best of riders, this is an instant Sedona classic!

Review: Simply my favorite trail in Sedona right now. This trail tests the limits of you heart and nerves, all in a short distance. The views are stunning, the ride dangerous, and the reward priceless. Hiline, another Double Black Diamond trail in the area doesn't have as much difficulty as this one. Parts I wont ever be able to ride, and I'm man enough to admit it.

Review: The road to catch is actually Schnebly Hill Rd. When the road turns into an old dirt jeep road, you'll see the TH on the left ($5.00 fee to park). Definitely take the Munds Wagon Trail (singletrack) instead of the jeep rd (Schnebly), as there are tons of jeeps and it's super dusty to climb the road up. Be aware of hikers and yeild accordingly. As you climb Munds, you'll eventually come to a sign for Hangover going to your left. Avoid taking this left and continue ahead on Munds as Hangover is best ridden counter-clockwise. You'll eventually come to a trail for Cowpie's going to the left. Take this singletrack and it will lead you to the beginning of Hangover. Without a doubt, this is an advanced to expert trail. If you don't do well with heights or exposure, definitely reconsider this trail to avoid being miserable. With that said, this trail is definitely a Sedona classic, and a blast! Don't let the short mileage of 3.2 miles for Hangover fool you. The climb up Munds and across Cowpies will take it's toll and leave you feeling a little gased. Hike a bike when necessary if you aren't feeling 100%, as falls on this trail will result in substantial damage to your bike and your body. Don't forget the camera, extra water, and food to fuel you through this one!
