Holiday Gift Guide for Mountain Bikers: Apparel

Putting the proper components on your bike is half the battle, but the other half–especially during the winter months–is dressing the part. If you’re shopping for a mountain biker (or yourself) this holiday season, here are some key clothing items for cross country riders, trail/enduro riders, and fat bikers.

Cross Country

Shopping for the no-compromise, go-fast mountain biker in your life can be a daunting task at times, which is why we’re here to help you out! You can’t go wrong with any of these products.

Helmet: Scott Arx Plus – $150

The Arx Plus is the first road helmet from Scott to feature MIPS protection. While it was originally intended for road riding, I found the Arx Plus to work just as well for cross country mountain biking. The big vents did an excellent job of cooling, the fit was very comfortable, and the styling made me look super fast! 🙂 While $150 is a bit on the pricy side for some helmets, for MIPS-equipped helmets it’s actually quite reasonable. With MIPS, you can ride confident in the fact that your brain has the best protection that money can buy.

Shorts: Hincapie Power GT Bib Short – $190

I’ve been using the Hincapie Power GT Bib Shorts for well over a year now, and while they’re beginning to show some signs of wear, they are still my go-to shorts even after all this time. While the $190 price tag may seem steep for a pair of bibs, if they last this long, you’ll get your money’s worth.

Check out my review of the Power GT from last November, here.

Jersey: Your Local Bike Shop, ~ $75

Undoubtedly your local bike shop or riding club sells a jersey with their logo splayed across it. Instead of buying a jersey with the logo of a big company on it, go support your local dudes and buy their jersey instead!

Gloves: Pearl Izumi SELECT – $25

It’s hard to beat Pearl Izumi’s proven SELECT half-finger gloves. Comfortable, padded where you need them and not where you don’t, these are guaranteed to last at least one solid season of riding.
