I must be the odd one. I use a liner and slime in my tires and keep them around 60 psi. Yesterday I ran right through the middle of a large cactus patch. i was picking spines (some rather large and thick) out of my tires and kept on riding with no flats, leaks nothing!

Well I don’t have to worry about cactus in Maryland thankfully, but I have seen and picked up a rather nasty thorns before. I will probably leave my tired/tub setup alone until I get a flat then decide what to do. I think if I start getting thorns though I will try the gel filled tubes and see how they hold up and how the extra weights affects my riding.

I doubt it’s the cables. I’ve seen bikes like yours with derailleurs that have tensioner springs so weak & adjuster barrels so loose it would be impossible to adjust. Not only that, but they’re put together by stock-boy/girl monkeys, not experienced wrenches.
I’d take your bike to an LBS for a good tune-up.

Thanks for the info. I am sure it’s cause its a cheapo bike, but its just a beginner, all in due time. I may have Dick’s look it over since it’s free, and if they can’t do anything about it there’s a good LBS around my way that could.

It’s been raining for 3 days straight and its finally supposed to clear up on Saturday, so I can’t wait to get out riding on Sunday, try and let the trails dry at least a little.

[quote:pcs9g09f]New User here, this is my first time posting. Say just saying hello and introducing myself. I’m 23 from Baltimore, MD and just starting to get into MTB, mostly trail riding at the local parks ect. I have a newbie bike but I plan to upgrade in the spring before the weather turns nice again. Anyway, if any local riders want to hit the trails on the weekends let me know.

Welcome to Singletracks! Don’t sweat the newbie bike, we all start somewhere. But when you upgrade to a [i:pcs9g09f]real[/i:pcs9g09f] MTB, you’ll be able to tell the difference easier! What kind of bike are you starting with?[/quote:pcs9g09f]

Thanks! Right now I have a Mongoose Maneuver, it’s dual suspension, a cheapo MTB from from DICK’s. So far it rides alright though, no real complaints. Sometimes the gears are funny, like it won’t always want to go into the lowest gear, or sometimes I have to jump 2 gears to get it to switch. I think the cables still have a little stretching to get broken in. I have the 2 year warranty so I figure I can beat it up all winter and get the free repairs, then upgrade once I have more time/money to ride.

in reply to: Are there any other pod riders out there??? #72526

I do not, I have an mp3 player, and I use it at the gym, just not while riding.

For some reason, I have a complex about being out in the woods alone and not being able to hear what is going on around me because I have head phones in.

Yep, looks like its just us here.

I didn’t take into consideration the extra rotating weight. I weight about 160lbs, 6’1". I really need to work on cardio training before I get to heavily into biking though, my asthma has gotten bad over the past year or two with my laziness.

Anyway I will probably go with the patch kit if I decide I really need one. I may wait until I get my first flat and then make that decision… I usually only ride a few miles from where I park, so I can walk back if it happens for now.

    thanks!

    in reply to: Helmets #69912

Hey Sweetlife, I am the same way, I don’t like to take much with me. I am just gonna stick with the helmet for now. Especially since I know a guy who broke his wrist on the same trail, but hey, if it were safe where would the adrenaline rush be right? I do keep a water bottle with me, that clips on to the bike frame, which has so far stayed in place pretty well.

I may get a camel pack or small back pack to carry a spare tube/hand pump/tools ect. in, haven’t decide on that yet though. I am still working on acquiring the basic gear(shoes, shorts, glasses, ect.)

    thanks for the insight!

    in reply to: Helmets #69910

hey Sweetlife, thanks for the reply.

Well I call it intermediate since thats what a lot of people say it is at this link [url:2plyb80v]http://www.singletracks.com/php/trail.php?id=949[/url:2plyb80v], but to sum it up, some decent climbs and down hills, lots of roots, a few stream crossings, and some rocks here and there.

I just picked up a nice set of gloves and some generic helmet from Dicks to make my next ride a little more fun(and safe). But I can’t wait to get started! Sadly I’ve started so late in the season, I only have about an hour of light left by the time I get off work.

    in reply to: Helmets #69908

I just started riding, and I took my first ride(fairly technical at that) without a helmet, thankfully I was okay, but a guy on the trail really warned me not too. So I went out and bought one a couple days ago.

My question, how many people wear knee/shin guards or elbow pads while riding intermediate trails?

in reply to: Maryland Clubs and Organizations #67933

Well I am new to MTB’ing so I’d def. be looking to hook up with some people to go riding and learn some of the local trails better. I don’t really know anyone else who rides, so I mostly ride alone when I go… which isn’t always safe.

If its not too far for you, I’d suggest the Patapsco Valley State Park Trails. You can enter a price nice(mostly down hill track) from at the end of 195(park and ride). Try to find a map, as there are lots of trails and its easy to get lost if you’re unfamiliar.

I’m pretty new to MTB riding but if any locals want to hook up for some trail riding let me know! I am still trying to find the better trails in the area… and not get myself lost.
