The San Diego Mountain Bike Association is warning mountain bikers to be careful when riding in the area around Lake Hodges after a rider was shot and had his bike stolen on a bike path near I-15. A police advisory describes the confrontation.

A 37 year old male was riding his bicycle eastbound on the bike path under I-15 when a male suspect, jumped out from behind the rocks. The suspect pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded his bike. The victim raised his hands and the suspect shot four times at the victim, striking the victim once in the hand. The victim jumped off his bike and ran the way he came. The suspect rode off in an unknown direction. The victim was transported to the hospital for his injury. The suspect was described as an unknown race male, 6’2″, thin and wearing all black clothing. SDPD’s Robbery detectives were notified.

While it’s unclear from the police report, community members report the bike that was stolen is a full suspension, orange Niner mountain bike. The attack was said to happen under a freeway bridge.

Unfortunately there isn’t a great description of the suspect, so area bikers should be vigilant and also keep a look out for an orange Niner that may be abandoned or for sale.

We’ll update this story as we receive additional information.

There are rumors of something similar happening to off-road moto riders in an area south of Atlanta. Riding with a group might deter future attacks, but it’s certainly not guaranteed.

Best thing to do is not buying a used orange Niner if the owner doesn’t have any receipt or purchase proof.

Jeff, as a native of Georgia and rider of most trails around here I’ve not heard that rumor. As of yet. Do you mind sharing what, when and where please so we can be informed? Thank you.

Clearly this is a rumor because I haven’t been able to find any news reports. The area in question is between Key Road and Constitution Rd. There is a greenway path through one corner of this area, but the parts where folks are said to ride motos doesn’t seem to be sanctioned.
