10 Best Lights for Mountain Biking

Daylight hours in the northern hemisphere are quickly dwindling, but the proliferation of high-quality mountain bike lights means there’s no reason you can’t keep pedaling after dark! Since bike lights are inherently based on electronic technology, that means these lights only get better every single year. Prices drop, run times increase, the internal tech gets better, and the weights keep trending lower.

Since many of the lights that were voted most highly by our readers this year also made the 2016 list, where possible I’ll do my best to highlight how this year’s lights have changed and progressed in less than 12 months.

10. Magicshine MJ-902B

The new MJ-902B light from Magicshine

The new MJ-900 line from Magicshine offers mountain bike lights with price points ranging from $60 to $160. The $120 MJ-902B light is the update to the popular, but now-defunct MJ-880R light model. The new light head features a radically redesigned case for maximum cooling. It offers two XM-L2 LEDs which Magicshine notes provide much more light, “producing a maximum of 1600 lumens of actual output” (emphasis added). The light comes with 4 pre-programmed brightness settings, but you can also create customized settings and control the light with the Bluetooth-connected Magicshine smartphone app for IOS and Android.

  • Lumens: 1,600
  • Run Time: 2.3hrs
  • Weight: 51.5g for the light head, 287g for the battery pack
  • Price: $120
