Mountain Biking Mckenzie River Trail

*****   Add a review
#3 of 306 mountain bike trails in Oregon
#65 in the world

The first 10 miles go thru a lava field making it the toughest part. Beyond there is a picnic area with water and smoother riding and easier. The whole ride is in old growth forest and the water is crystal blue. Waterfalls, pools and log bridges (walk across) and the forest make this the most fun and most beautiful ride I have ever done. Bring a camera. Difficulty is due to length, not climbs.

Getting there
Above Clear Lake on the east side of the road is parking and the trail start. Starting here makes almost the whole ride, downhill. Most do this as a shuttle from there to a mile above McKenzie Bridge.

Rider questions

Q: I'm just passing through with family in tow and won't have lots of time. I would love to shuttle a section of this trail. I see several parking lots on Trailforks map. Which section would you do if you only had an hour and a half?
A: I'd start at the upper TH above Clear Lake; ride along the west side of the lake and then the scenic sections to the TH on FS road 2672-655. Ending there will be just over 10 miles of riding. Might take a bit more than an hour and a half if you admire the scenery too much or struggle with the lava fields.

Q: When is the best time of the year to do this ride?
A: Summer, trail is almost always shaded in deep forest. Swimming holes and waterfalls.
