Trail Description
About this trail
Methodist Mountain is one of the newest trail systems in the Salida area, and is one of two trail systems starting right from the town of Salida. Located on the southern side of town, Methodist Mountain is very dry, with a high-desert environment. Consequently, the trails are rocky, sandy, but stay dry and rideable for almost all of the year.

While the Arkansas Hills trail system were all built by hand, the Methodist Mountain trails are machine-built. The machine work is all very well done, and the trail is still very narrow, but the main trail, Little Rainbow, has a nice, wide corridor, is very flowy, and quite smooth. As a result, this is the most beginner friendly trail in town... but it's still a ton of fun for advanced riders!

While the main trail might be easier, there are several intermediate and advanced trails in the system, too. Check out the Little Rainbow Extension for a great intermediate trail with some serious exposure, and the steep, frequently washed-out Lost Cause trail for a screaming fast, rocky, advanced descent back down to town. If you want a milder yet way-fun descent, be sure to rip down the Race Track trail!

Review: Rode up Racetrack from Burmac Rd. then all the way across on Little Rainbow. At the end we turned around and retraced our route back to the parking lot. Had a lot of fun swooping through the drainages. Not technical but a blast to ride.

Review: Expansive trail system with a different, flowier feel than Arkansas HIlls. Great connectivity to other trails higher up the mountain but also accessible in town.

Review: Probably my favorite trail system in Chaffee County. These trails see much less traffic than the Arkansas Hills system. These trails have a much longer stretch of flowing non-tech trails so you can get a longer ride without stressing your pacemaker. Favorite route: out and back starting at Burmac Rd., up Racetrack, Little Rainbow, Double Rainbow and back... get the climbing out of the way first then swoop back to your car.

Review: If you're looking for a technically-easy ride of about 10-15 miles in Salida, here's a great loop:

Here's a good loop:
-From town (even from Absolute Bikes), head out towards Hwy 50 on F Street.
-Turn right along the Hwy.
-Turn left onto County Road 110
-Climb up the gravel road (starts as paved, turns to gravel) until you reach the Little Rainbow Trailhead. If you can pick up the Skull Trail as a bit of singletrack on your climb (check out the map of this ride here: ) Great! If not, just climb the gravel road.
-Ride across on the Little Rainbow trail all the way to the end. This is a great singletrack trail with decent views, and the easiest singletrack in town.
-At the end of the Little Rainbow, descend the Race Track trail back down the mountain.
-Pedal out to the pavement, turn left on Hwy 50.
-Turn right onto Hwy 291/1st street, and pedal back to downtown.

Review: Fun singletrack, mostly not too technical but still enough twists and turns and ups and downs to keep the brain going.

If you like the twisty stuff, try and include Double Rainbow aka little rainbow extension. Well worth the extra miles IMHO.

Review: Awesome machine built singletrack just outside the town of Salida. Some of the trails were carved out by dirtbikers, but some of the newer trails (such as little rainbow) were built by quality trail building machines.

The singletrack is all pretty excellent! There are some flowy sections, but some pretty rocky, chunky areas (that still flow well too).

The terrain up on Methodist Mountain definitely feels like high-desert terrain--a sharp contrast to the lush mountains and forests up on the nearby Monarch Crest Trail.

This is an excellent ride from town, and can be combined with the Arkansas Hills Trail System for even more mileage.

Review: Great trail, amazing scenery and courteous, friendly dirt-bikers were encountered. Thanks for carving the trail out for all us mountain-bikers ;)

Review: I know what you are saying and people like you are fine. I just wish some of the other people that don't believe in sharing the trail would think about it for a minute.

Review: @ The person below me: Is this really the most appropriate forum for such a comment? While the offending person was a mountain biker in question, I still think not. If a moderator could take care of this, that would be awesome. But that's still a good word to us cyclists: respect other users of the trails. Personally, I like to be cool with everyone.

Review: Hey I just wanted to let you all know that these trails are open to dirtbikers as well and even though you don't much like it that's the way it is. Stop your complaining and quit trying to close everything to us. The next beligerant biker I come up to on the Rainbow Trail is going to hear plenty about the stupidy in this. We have every right to be there too so just deal with it!

Similar Trail: Go find one that you've already closed to dirtbikes and enjoy that one and quit complaining.
