AZT Expeditions has just announced the addition of two new self-guided trips on the Arizona Trail to their lineup: Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon and Flagstaff to Mormon Lake. These trips are notable because they “represent the first commercial mountain biking permitted by Coconino National Forest’s Flagstaff Ranger District in recent memory,” according to a release from AZT Expeditions.
In short, if you want to embark on a commercially-supported mountain bike experience on these sections of trail, these trips are the only legal options in existence. “The permit application was approved largely because of AZT Expeditions’ partnership with the Arizona Trail Association (ATA). A portion of tour proceeds go back to the ATA and are used for maintenance and management of the Arizona Trail,” the release continues.
“Flagstaff and the San Francisco Peaks are a very important part of what makes the 800-mile Arizona National Scenic Trail so unique. The Arizona Trail passes through the Sonoran Desert, climbs onto the Mogollon Rim, wraps around the San Francisco Peaks near Flagstaff, drops in and out of the Grand Canyon and finally descends to the Utah border across the Kaibab Plateau. We felt the Flagstaff portion was critical for riders to really appreciate what the trail has to offer,” said Matt McFee, AZT Expeditions Director.
