Garmin Fitness Services are (Mostly) Back Online After Extended Outage

According to the Garmin System Status page, many of the company’s online services are back online as of today, though some continue operating in a limited capacity.

We are happy to report that Garmin Connect recovery is underway. We’d like to thank you for your understanding and patience as we restore normal operations.

It appears most of the features used by mountain bikers within Garmin Connect are back, though the following are still being affected:

  • Garmin Coach: “Existing plans may have delays processing Activities and assigning new workouts.”
  • Strava: “Segments are being queued to sync to devices” and “Uploaded Activities are being sent to Strava as received.”
  • Wellness Sync: “Sync is working but data processing may be delayed.”
  • Challenges and Connections: “Challenges can be created and viewed but leaderboard stats may be delayed.”
  • Daily Summary: “Daily summary is viewable but some data may be delayed.”
  • Third Party Sync: “Health sync may be delayed.”

Reports and activity uploads are now being processed normally according to Garmin, and device registration is said to be back up and running.

Almost exactly one week ago, Garmin was hit by a massive systems outage that was reportedly caused by a ransomeware attack. Garmin later confirmed that “it was the victim of a cyber attack that encrypted some of our systems on July 23, 2020.” The company also noted there is “no indication that any customer data, including payment information from Garmin Pay™, was accessed, lost or stolen.”
