Garmin has two new cycling computers to extend its massive catalog and guide riders deeper into their adventures. The Edge 130 Plus retails for $199.99 to $249.99, and the larger, color-screen Edge 1030 Plus models range between $599.99 and $699.99. Let’s dive into the details.
The latest cycling computers from Garmin pack all of the usual features in, like ride tracking, route planning and turn by turn directions, and the ability to pair the unit with a power meter, cell phone, or any other sensor a rider might have. The Edge 130 Plus model (available at REI) also includes a barometric altimeter so riders can see how much they’ve climbed on a given ride, or how many meters away the summit is on a route that they’ve uploaded.
If you like to get air, the Edge 130 Plus will also track your jump count, jump distance, and overall hang time over the course of a ride. Maybe the new KOM/QOM focus can be on who touches the dirt least down a trail?
If you should happen to crash, the computer has an incident function that alerts your emergency contacts of your precise location. You can also let people know where you are while riding, and where you’re headed, so you friends can track your progress and make sure that you’re safe.
Athletes who are watching their power and heart rate numbers and working toward specific fitness goals will appreciate this computer’s VO2 max, heart rate, and calories burned metrics. Both of these units are designed to work indoors and outside, which is good news for folks in colder climates or those currently in quarantine.
Edge 130 Plus units have a reported 12 hour battery life while in GPS mode.
While the Edge 130 Plus models are packed with button-actuated features, the larger Edge 1030 Plus model adds a color touch screen that Garmin says can easily be manipulated when wet and with gloves on.
In addition to having all of the same features as the 130 Plus, the touch screen model offers some useful training features. “The Edge 1030 Plus lets riders see how their body is holding up in different environments with heat and altitude acclimation and receive in-ride notifications when it’s time to refuel or rehydrate.”
To top it off the Edge 1030 Plus has twice the battery life of the 130 Plus, covering a full 24 hour day with navigation, training, and connectivity features.
