On Friday, a press release announced that Canadian bike brand Rocky Mountain was under new ownership. Then on Sunday, another development: Rocky Mountain bikes are now available for purchase at REI.

In December 2024, Singletracks reported that Rocky Mountain filed for protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act in Canada, a form of business restructuring similar to bankruptcy in the US. The brand wrote in a release at the time, “Despite strong demand for its bikes during the pandemic, the Company struggled to secure supplies due to shortages and rising costs. Once the pandemic was over, the Company had to contend with a sharp drop in selling prices.”

A group of four Canadian investors, operating under the name Chaos Sports Inc., has acquired the brand, which got its start in Vancouver, BC, in 1981. Three of the four investors are involved in another bike brand, Maui Bikes, which is focused on electric bikes.

“In the short term, business operations, customer service, after-sales support, and partner commitments will continue as usual,” according to the new owners. “All warranties offered by Rocky Mountain in recent years will be fully honored. Bike parts and components will remain available.”

Now, Rocky Mountain bikes are available for sale through REI

It seems one of the new owners’ first orders of business was to make some of the brand’s most popular mountain bike models available for sale at REI and REI.com. The retailer sent an email late Sunday announcing the availability of several models, including carbon Element, Instinct, and Altitude builds. REI is also stocking Rocky Mountain Growler Jr. kids’ mountain bikes.

The REI website shows that bikes are available for pickup in store or delivered directly to customers. It’s unknown if Rocky Mountain bikes will be stocked in REI stores or if they will only be available through the REI website.

The Rocky Mountain bikes on offer are priced at full MSRP, though REI is promoting the fact that Co-op members receive 10% in rewards for their Rocky Mountain bike purchases. REI Member rewards can then be used to purchase items in store and online.

Other online retailers, including Jenson USA and Competitive Cyclist, had already been selling Rocky Mountain bikes online, and both are currently showing many models available for sale at a discount.
