The Sea Otter Classic, usually held in April, was one of the first bike events to postpone after coronavirus started to spread in the United States in March. After weighing a few options, the tradeshow and bike festival decided to postpone the event six months later to October, but as we get closer, it’s clear that large events like Sea Otter won’t return as soon as once thought.

“After frequent discussions with Monterey County health officials, it has become clear that we cannot host an event that will meet our health and safety standards,” said Frank Yohannan, the president and CEO of the Sea Otter Classic. “This has always been our top priority. Consequently, we have decided to cancel the Sea Otter Classic scheduled for October 1-4, 2020. The Bicycle Leadership Conference is also cancelled.”

Instead, there will be a virtual Sea Otter, dubbed Sea Otter Play presented by Continental. The event will serve as a virtual tradeshow and event, with cycling challenges to raise funds for Covid-19 relief.

Sea Otter Play will take place from September 17-20 and the ride challenges will begin on September 1.
