  • I think the thing to keep in mind is that the kid is okay. Having said that, launching a SAR mission throughout the night and involve over 20 people scouring the park is damned expensive, and used up valuable resources for the duration of the mission.

It’s easy to get turned around in a forest, especially if you’re not keeping track of where you are. Plus, people react differently to certain situations. Maybe the kid panicked and wasn’t thinking straight? Some people become irrational when in that situation, while others take stock of the situation and act accordingly.

He should’ve had at least some gear with him other than a cell phone (he at least had that). It wouldn’t have been a comfortable night, but certainly might have helped with the psychology of the situation.

Common sense and experience tells us that he made a series of mistakes, but I don’t think it’s fair to pile on the guy. We’ve all been down similar roads, and we don’t know the whole story.

Along with the previous suggestions, I’ve always found that after a hard workout (along with cool-down stretches) going for a quick 10-20 min. stroll or a very easy ride every now and again also really helps ease the pain and reduces the stiffness for a while. It sucks until things get warmed up, but I find it’s better than sitting around not being able to move very well.

You don’t have to be bed-bound for recovery to take place, but you do need to rest those muscles until they’re healed. Whatever you do, don’t push too hard before your muscles have had a chance to repair themselves. It takes a lot longer to recover if you keep injuring them.

in reply to: SRAM bringing back gripshift in 10 speed #106535

I’ve never liked Grip Shift. I always found that I felt like I was riding with one hand when changing gears, let alone trying to quickly change both ends of the bike to avoid cross gearing if I misjudged an approach or whatnot. I just didn’t like the whole twist-wrist thing.

My wife has Grip Shift on her bike, and she curses the things on uphills. It’s a mix of her choosing to change gears too late (I keep quiet about that one now 😮 ), and the twist-wrist thing bothers her even while she’s trying not to stall out on the way up.

Welcome back to mountain biking Loaf! I think you’ll have fun no matter what you’re riding so don’t get hung up on upgrading or buying a new bike just yet (though clipless pedals might be a good short term investment).

You’re probably right – just need to get on the saddle in the first place lol

    Welcome to the site!

Where do you live? You don’t have to wait for spring if you’ve got enough clothes 😀

I live in Winnipeg, MB, Canada. Also known as FloodiPeg, Winterpeg, and Murderpeg lol

It’s actually been quite mild this winter, and there are riders out already even though there’s still white stuff all over. Other winters can get down to -40C, so generally people scurry whenever they’re outside.
