A little O.T., but I’m about to embark on an epic week-long ski trip hitting 3 different resorts in the northern Midwest, including 2 days each at the two best: Lutsen and Mt. Bohemia. I’ll be posting regular updates on my blog, [url:2tbfjrrw]http://www.gregridestrails.com[/url:2tbfjrrw], so feel free to follow along and see what kind of gnar we get to shred!

It’s going to be quite the ride, especially considering that I haven’t skied in about two years due to a move from Montana to Georgia. I’m banking on my 11 years of skiing experience to kick back in pretty quickly though.

PS Officially launching my personal FIRST .com address of [url:2tbfjrrw]http://www.gregridestrails.com[/url:2tbfjrrw] I’m super stoked about this blog, as I have taken it to a "’hole ‘nuther level" of professionalism and consistency. Hope to see you guys around the blog, and be sure to check in for frequent updates about our epic road trip!

skiing is like riding a bike, you may get a little rusty at it but one run down and it’s like you never had a break from it. wish i could join you.

I read something recently that was comparing skiing/boarding to DH mountain biking. Seems pretty apt in terms of speed, picking lines, etc. Then again, there are slopes I’d have no problem skiing straight down but would never attempt on a bike (too steep). Weird.

have to agree with picking lines, skiing, mt biking and i would throw in trail running are very similiar in "picking" your line. Not a boarder but would have to assume it is also similiar.

Yeah definitely a lot in common with downhill skiing and downhill mountain biking. My non-riding skiing buddies can relate when we talk picking lines and such. Wish I could get some of them on 2 wheels, but heck its their loss.

Sounds like a good trip Goo. Skiing is what gets me through winter. I hope to get in at least one more trip to Snowshoe and/or Canaan Valley.

Right on man, skiing is incredible!

I actually wrote a post a couple days ago about the similarities between xc/am riding and downhill skiing. Obviously downhill biking is more similar, but all sorts of mountain biking and skiing relate in some way. It’s pretty cool.

We were planning on CO, but it was too last minute. I’ve got family in the midwest, so this worked out well, and have been able to ski with a bunch of friends that I wouldn’t have gotten to ride with if I’d gone out west.

So all in all it’s been an amazing trip so far!

Yea I really meant AM anyways, I never have done the lift serviced true downhill type riding. Skiing and mountain bike downhill (AM) riding give me the same adrenaline rush. Keeps an old guy feeling a little bit young 😆
Read your blog this AM . Man you guys rip it up on skiis. Wish I had learned how to ski when I was young like you did. I think that gives you a lot more confidence. Cool stuff, have fun on your trip. I hit Snowshoe Saturday for some good skiing. Looking down Cup Run and Shays I was thinking about what Trek7 said about skiing steeper stuff than you would ride. Ain’t no way I would ride a bike down something that steep.

Kayaking reminds me a little of mountain biking too. You have to pick good lines through rock gardens or you end up swimming with the fishes.

Thanks for the kind words man! yes, I was really blessed to been started skiing at a young age. It has been a great sport these past 12 years!

And thanks for the read! The trip has been great so far. 3 more days to dominate the snow! And then I guess it’s back to riding singletrack.

Skiing and biking still are two very different sports as relates to how they operate physically. You can ski really FREAKING STEEP terrain if you know what you’re doing. Bikes just aren’t designed to do what skis can do, and the mechanics frankly can’t allow it. In that respect, it’s a whole different ball game. Wheels and brakes operate totally different than a pair of metal edges that you bury into the snowy side of a mountain.
