The North American Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA) has been growing in leaps and bounds across the United States in recent years. The newest league, announced at Interbike this year, is Georgia.
“We’re very excited to be a part of this movement, and look forward to capitalizing on the very strong cycling community in Georgia, and bringing this thing to a reality,” said Dan Brooks, lead director of the new Georgia NICA League.
The addition of Georgia as the newest league brings NICA up to a total of 10 existing leagues. The previous leagues are NorCal, SoCal, Colorado, Texas, Minnesota, Utah, New York, Tennessee, and Arizona. At the present time, there are 3,000 student athletes participating across the nation, coached by over 900 licensed coaches.

While high school mountain bike racing won’t commence in Georgia until the fall of 2014, now is the formative time for the new league. Riders interested in coaching or racing (depending on age) are encouraged to fill out this survey to judge interest and help decide where specific teams can be formed.

My son is racing in the Colorado League this year. I have been impressed with how well organized and run everything is, from scheduling to registration to volunteering, to actual conduct of the races. Everyone in the organization seems to be quite chill yet efficient at the same time–a rare combination.
I saw part of a race in Park City, Utah last weekend. In just its second year, Utah is already the largest league. Last year they had 250 kids at the PC race… this year they had 615 registered racers! The production was HUGE, but very well organized. Impressive!
I am proud to say that Marshall County High School in far Western tip of Kentucky has a Mountain Bike team this year and has at least 12 members racing in the Tennessee league with hopes of seeing a Kentucky league next year!
Very nice!
I think this is absolutely awesome, what a great way to get kids into MTBing. I already told my LBS they should be a sponsor especially since there aren’t any listed for GA yet.
