Mountain biking the Lionhead Trails west of Yellowstone provides some of the best backcountry riding in the country with swaths of wildlife and wildflowers in the summer.
The U.S. Forest Service released a draft forest plan for the Custer Gallatin National Forest and the public can comment until June 6, 2019 (Thursday). The intentions with the new plan are to reduce impact on the forest from a fast-growing population as well as preserve the ecosystem and protect the environment from climate change.
The current draft plan includes the Lionhead area as a Recommended Wilderness Area (RWA) which would eliminate mountain bike access. Alternative land management designations exist to protect the area while maintaining bike access.
IMBA is asking mountain bikers to recommend the area as a non-motorized Backcountry Area designation, rather than an RWA. IMBA says that the Backcountry Area designation will protect the landscape and allow mountain bike access at the same time.
