The first-ever mountain bike race to be held in One of India’s first mountain bike races will take place on November 17th in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains, according to an article I spotted on The Hindus Business Line .com.

According to the article,

Being organised jointly by the Mountain Track Biking Association (MTBA) of Uttarakhand, Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and Artsmith Concepts and Visions with support from the state government and the Indian Army, the event will have races in three categories for the elite riders (20kms), the amateurs (15kms) and the teens (10kms), MTBA, Uttarakhand president Rahul Jain told reporters here today.

The race is purportedly called “Cycle for Life,” which is by no means a unique name. A quick Google search reveals that the same name is also used for cystic fibrosis and cancer-awareness rides in the US, as well as an annual ride on the North Shore in support of a children’s hospital.

More specific Google searches did not return any additional information about the Indian race, but hopefully the mountain bike race movement in India continues to grow!

Update:

I thought that there must surely have been a mountain bike race held in India before, and after a little digging I found this article that Jeff wrote back in 2009: MTB Stage Race in India. Apparently, the Hindu Business Line doesn’t know what’s going on in the mountain biking world. 🙂 Still, the race scene in India isn’t large by any means, so it’s cool to see it beginning to grow.
