Mountain Biking Warm Springs Ridge

*****   Add a review
#63 of 265 mountain bike trails in Montana
#5,001 in the world

From the Lost Trail dropoff follow the Saddle Mountain Road as it contours and descends, stay right and go past the Colter Creek and Divide Trail Trailheads. It is another 1.2 miles to the signed singletrack. The trail is very narrow at first, then drops very steeply to the junction with Shields Creek Trail. Here the trail widens and rolls through timber to a wide meadow. This is very near the Porcupine Saddle, just head across the meadow and climb, the trail is just at the tree line. It is just over 3 miles from the road to the meadow and Porcupine Saddle.
From Porcupine Saddle the trail is all single track to the end. You first climb for about a mile before you get on the ridge. The trail follows this ridge north, staying on it or just on the west side. The first 8 miles is mixed climbing and descending. The last 4 miles is all downhill, great single track.

About 4 miles from Porcupine Saddle you will descend a little bit to a hunting camp. From the camp, turn around and face the trail you came in on, look left and you will see where Warm Springs Ridge Trail continues. Other than this tricky spot it is a very easy trail to follow.

The big forest fires of 2000 have left this trail with alot of deadfall so you will need to be alert coming around corners. Bring a trail saw and some gloves to help gradually make it better for everybody.

Getting there
This is a shuttle ride. Drop one vehicle at the Spring Gulch Campground a couple miles north of Sula near the end of the Warm Springs Road.
The ride has two starting points. One at the Porcupine Saddle Trailhead (12 mile ride), and the other from Lost Trail Ski Area (17-20 miles depending on where you start).
For Porcupine Saddle, drive up Road #8112 8.5 miles to the trailhead via Indian Trees Campground at the base of Lost Trail Pass and near Lost Trail Hot Springs.
For Lost Trail Ski Area, head back south on US-93 to the top of the pass, go through the ski area parking lot and take the road to the left of the buildings. The best spot to dropoff for shuttleing is at the meadow where the road levels out near the top of the Ski Area.
