Trail Description
About this trail
This is the newest addition to the Buffalo Creek trail system. If you're looking for the quickest out-and-back in BC, this is it. From the Forest Service office, it's only 10.5 miles if you take 543 to Nice Kitty, up to the Colorado Trail and back. The trail is very similar to Morrison Creek and Shinglemill, just slightly different scenery, and more trees and slickrock at the bottom. It's a relatively easy 1,300 foot climb, and because of that, and the exposure, it's a good early season trail. The descent is very typical of BC trails-gentle, good flow, but a lot of the cat litter gravel everywhere, so you don't have a ton of traction. On a side-note, it's called Nice Kitty due to the local wildlife, so keep your eyes open.

Review: Nice Climb out from the Buffalo Creek trailhead. Not very technical. I only had to get off and walk twice. Exposed at the top because you are riding through the burn. Also, fairly remote. Bring some Mylar with you (like a space blanket and poncho) in case you get caught in some weather. Note, this is a BIG climb. Expect to be peddling for an hour at least. The grades aren't hard, it's simply long.

Review: Rather steep and technical the first 1.5 mi climbing out of the Buffalo Creek canyon. After that, it is a fairly easy climb. Looks like it could be a fun DH, especially the bottom 1.5 mi section.

Review: Of the climbing choices out of the Buffalo Creek trailhead, Nice Kitty offers a solid 4-mile climb with a few technical rock sections to climb over and challenge your technical fitness skills. The second half of the climb through the burn zone is a stark reminder of the destruction fire can wreak on the wilderness.

Review: Although the trail can be ridden in either direction, most people choose to ride uphill from the Buffalo Creek TH towards the Colorado Trail and Lil Scraggy TH. Somewhat of a sustained climb, with limited technical sections a great views of the burn areas near the top.

Review: All my previous rides at Buffalo Creek I rode up Buck Gulch from the Pine Lake trail head. Nice Kitty is a way better climb. Not easy, but much more rideable than Buck Gulch. Never felt like I was going to have to get off and walk. There are a couple of technical spots that can be tricky to clean, but they are are all makeable.

Review: This may be my new favorite climb. It's long and steep enough to be taxing, but still quite doable. The few little techy bits keep the interest factor and the scenery is among the best in the Buffalo Creek area. This trail also opens up new loop opportunities. I suspect it makes a fine downhill as well.

Review: Classic Buff Creek with a killer climb and killer views. Intersects with the Colorado trail and one of the most beautiful vistas in the Buffalo Creek area.

Review: I meant to ride the Colorado Trail / Green Mountain loop but accidentally ended up on this. (Note: I did an out-and-back from the FR-550 parking lot down to the bridge near S Buffalo Creek Road, but it would probably be better to do the reverse and start from the Buffalo Creek parking lot.) From FR-550, it starts out as nice rolling singletrack through the burned out forest, turning slowly into more of a downhill. Once you hit treeline, the trail becomes more downhill all the way to the bottom. Take a break by the creek then turn around and head back up. The first bit of climbing is tough because of all the gravel and sand, but it gets better once the incline starts leveling out. The remainder is an easy climb that turns into a fast ride back to the trailhead. It's a fun ride with beautiful views, the only thing keeping my rating from a 5 is all the gravel and sand. The lack of traction slows you down on what should be fun turns and easy climbing.
