Mountain Biking Matthews State Forest Trail

*****   Add a review
#70 of 300 mountain bike trails in Virginia
#2,554 in the world

The parking area is located on White Pine Rd. Follow the fire rd approximately 1/4 mile to the start of the singletrack on the left. The trail is well marked and easy to follow. There are a few exits, but the trail is essentially a loop. It can be ridden in either direction, but is only marked in the primary direction. There is one technical section consisting of two rock gardens, very nearly back to back and can easily feel like one long rock garden. The remainder of the trail is very friendly to most novice mountain bikers, but never fails to challenge.

One direction well marked and plenty of climbing. The only drawback was the long hunting season when the trail is closed.I would avoid the Wasteland area and take the bypass because the Wasteland is pretty much that and full of thornes.

Hidden gem of a world class trail system in the area of Galax, VA. Big climbs, fast descent, rock gardens, gullies, creek crossing and beautiful scenic views at the summit. Just an awesome trail system and definitely going back for more fun.

If you have to go to work on Monday leave your man card at the gate and don't be afraid to get off and push in a few places. This trail is why we mountain bike, very tough in places but worth the effort.
