With the full support of land manager Merced Irrigation District, it wouldn’t seem right not to build a downhill line through the 700-acre site of wide open terrain descending 800 feet to a 1 million acre lake that is Exchequer Mountain Bike Park. Two hours west of Sacramento and San Francisco, tucked in the foothills of the Sierra Nevadas in Mariposa County, sits a blank canvas on the northwest banks of Lake McClure pining for advanced downhill trail. The new trail is all part of Exchequer’s ultimate plan to install 50-60 miles of singletrack spanning the spectrum of skill set and, in so doing, will complete California’s largest mountain bike-only park.

When the day’s downhill duties come to a close, you can forget rushing back to town and instead, wind down lakeside at the Exchequer Bike Park’s access point, Barret Cove Recreation Area. The full service campground offers over 200 tent and RV sites as well as small cabin and houseboat rentals. You might even plan a non-riding bonus day and enjoy some time aboard a kayak, paddleboard, or wave runner–also available to rent.
