Etiquette. Rules. Social norms. Whatever you call them, trail users have developed a set of written and unwritten dos and don’ts to keep the peace and protect the environment. If you’ve been riding mountain bikes for any amount of time, you know that not everyone is aware of the rules, and even those who are aware don’t always follow the rules.
What is the best way to educate trail users about general etiquette and/or one of these issues in particular? Share your suggestions in the comments below!

So, whether climbers or descenders yield depends on the trail. This makes for a communication challenge.

Next on the list as a whole for all trail users, NOT READING MAPS and IGNORING directional signage. And riders blasting down multi use trails as if they are directional bike only...

I'm not sure if these people don't know or don't care, but I have no problem yelling at and forcing a stop for the idiots who plow down the trail at me when I'm riding uphill. It's just rude. Learn the rules and be a decent human being. If it's education, probably the most effective way would be to go through bike stores and retailers. Have snippets on trail etiquette and safety everywhere - at stores, online, attached to piece of big gear and clothes. Maybe it will sink in and people will learn to be better humans. I will say that, being a woman, this is mostly an issue with men --- sorry guys, I know you are not all like this, but in a popular riding area where I live I'd say its 50:50 for guys and I've never had an issue with other women riders. Also - communicate!!! Talk to people on the trail.
