MTB trails: Good and bad news

Hikers and bikers are up in arms in Marin County (again/still) over illegal mountain bike trails. This time some bikers accidentally found themselves on an illegal trail and nearly killed themselves on some anti-bike booby traps. Reminds me of the story out of Texas I reported back in February. I’m pretty sure the penalty for riding your bike on an illegal trail is at worst a felony, not the death penalty as some trail users apparently believe.

Now for the good news: the midwest is getting some more mountain bike trails – the legal kind. Just last week we reported on the planned trails in Cleveland and now trails are sprouting at Potato Creek State Park just outside South Bend, IN. Volunteers have been working hard on the 6 mile system and hope to have bikes on trail just in time for the summer.

It’s always nice to end on a positive note, aren’t you glad you said bad news first? Let’s hope the good news outweighs the bad news in 2007. I’d like to track the net new MTB mileage created this year, send me any articles or info about new trails opening (or old trails closing) and I’ll start posting the running tally.

New in 2007: 6 miles.
