Yamaha has been building ebike motors since 1993, and they now have a mountain bike frame of their own. The new YDX Moro and Moro Pro are 27.5+ 160mm aluminum all mountain bikes designed to assist in the trail fun.
The bikes use a horst link suspension design that Yamaha says “is fully active regardless of rider input.” The frame has a split top tube, protecting the shock between two alloy tubes while reportedly adding to the overall stiffness. Full build specs and pricing for the two models will be available in August. In these press release photos, it looks like a SRAM/RockShox heavy component selection accompanied by Magura brakes, though that is all subject to change.
The geo on this latest aluminum e-MTB is somewhat unique. The size medium has a stubby 432mm reach, typical of most size small gravity bikes, and the massive 469mm rear-to-center measurement across the size run is likely better balanced by the 478mm reach of the size large frame. The 19mm bottom bracket drop and 66.3° headtube angle are right about where we would expect to see them on a new electric all-mountain whip.
The bike’s PW-X2 drive unit pushes 500w of power, with assistance up to 20mph to fit Class-1 requirements. The motor can be run in four modes, including Eco, Standard, a new MTB mode, and EXPW. There is also an automatic mode that shifts between Eco and High to react to rider input and trail pitch, and a walking mode to move the bike while the rider hikes.
