Wolf Tooth expands into hubs with US-made offering

Minnesota-based Wolf Tooth expands into the wheel category with US-machined aluminum hubs using Enve's Innerdrive ratchet system.

Minnesota-based Wolf Tooth Components is rolling out a line of US-machined and assembled hubs for road, gravel, and mountain bikes today. The new ratchet-driven hubs are designed to be low maintenance, durable, and easy to service.

This launch marks yet another expansion for the component brand. Last year, Wolf Tooth introduced their first set of clipless pedals, adding to their existing line of bicycle cockpit and drivetrain components, adapters, and tools. Aluminum hubs are their first foray into the wheel space.

Innerdrive ratchet system gives riders options when it comes to hub engagement

Wolf Tooth chose the Enve Innerdrive ratchet ring system, introduced in 2024, rather than a pawl-based solution for the new hubs. Innerdrive uses a large, 42mm drive ring to ensure a tooth size that’s strong and durable enough even at high tooth counts.

How high? Innerdrive ratchet rings are available in 40 (road and gravel only), 60, 80, and 100T sizes. At 100T, the hub offers its fastest engagement at 3.6°. DT Swiss hubs also make use of a ratchet hub design with tooth counts maxing out slightly lower at 90T. Buyers choose their ratchet at the time of purchase and can buy additional ratchets separately for $99.95.

Fans of high-engagement hubs will likely scoff at 3.6° of engagement when rivals like Industry Nine boast sub-1 ° engagement. However, not everyone needs or wants a high-engagement hub, what with concerns about pedal kickback and drag. In a press release announcing the new hubs, Wolf Tooth says “the 40T PRO ratchet is our preferred setup and ships stock in all Wolf Tooth Road / Gravel Hubs.” With fewer teeth, the 40T PRO ratchet makes use of a smaller diameter, which saves weight while also generating less drag.

Dedicated MTB hubs for gravity riding

At launch, Wolf Tooth is offering three different hubs, two of which are designed for mountain biking. The XC/Trail hub is designed to fit 28 straight-pull spokes front and rear and weighs 371g for the pair.

The gravity hub sports a more angular, aggressive look and is designed for 28 J-bend spokes front and 32 spokes rear. The front hub fits both 15mm and 20mm axles, presumably with an included adapter, and the hub set is said to weigh 442g.

Standard bearing sizes promise streamlined maintenance

Wolf Tooth says their new hubs utilize standard bearing sizes, which promises easier sourcing when it’s time for repair. Some hubs, like the original Industry Nine Hydras, spec proprietary bearings that can be hard to find. In addition, Wolf Tooth touts their Perfect Preload system, “which delivers tool-free, adjustment-free preload on the hub internals for prolonged bearing life, minimal maintenance, and reduced drag.”

Wolf Tooth hubs are available in six colors at launch and can be ordered online at the company’s website. A hub set is priced at $729.90, or $239.95 for the front and $489.95 for the rear.

In addition, Wolf Tooth hubs will be available on a variety of premium wheelsets with Enve and We Are One, with prices ranging from $1,975 to $2,900.
