Next year marks 50 years since Repack, which many consider to be the first organized mountain bike race ever held. The event got its name because racers needed to repack their coaster brakes with fresh grease after each run, and at the 1977 event, Joe Breeze is said to have tested the first “purpose-built” mountain bike.
Mountain bike technology has come a long way since then, and despite better bikes and better tech, long-time mountain bikers can have a hard time letting go of old standards. We want to know which old tech (if any) Singletracks readers miss the most.

I'm 5'10 but My inseam is only 27". Even a 27.5" feels too big. I feel like I'm sat "IN" modern bikes, not "ON" them. My only "modern" upgrade is a 27.5" front wheel on one of my Maverick ML8s. It's easy to reduce the travel on a DUC32s fork. That 3.5lb 5" dual crown USD makes a huge difference and I'd put it against any Fox, Push or Öhlins.

I wonder when that became not-a-thing?
Somewhere between a early 90's Trek 930 and early 2000's 8000SLR based on my frames.

I don't want or need a chopper.
I especially don't want a bottom bracket so low it leads to frequent pedal strikes.

With a cheap "Wide 9" cassette my old 26"ers can keep up with and out climb many 29" plastic missiles.
I'm never switching to carbon, I'm too heavy and I saw a Raven shatter.
