Stage 3 of the 4-stage La Ruta mountain bike race is taking place today in the steamy jungles of Costa Rica and from what I’ve read this could easily be the world’s toughest mountain bike race. The first stage covered 59 miles and boasted more than 15,000 feet of climbing through sticky mud and oppressive heat and humidity. From the official race website:

This is not a race for anyone you must be in perfect physical condition, mentally you must be super strong willing to endure many hours of discomfort and you must have trust worthy equipment.

The website goes on to state that 40% of racers do not complete the race – and this is after shelling out $999 and traveling all the way down to Costa Rica!  Definitely not for the faint of heart…
