  • in reply to: how hard is Downieville Downhill? #258668

I took my 11 and 13 year old kids there last summer and they were fine.  A little bit of a stretch distance wise, and a couple of sections they walked, but I’d say if your 10 year old is into it- no worries.   But, another idea is the same company does another run- mills peak, that is shorter and mellower.  I’d say start with that.  It is same area, but shorter and easier.  If he likes that, can try the full downhill.  Just make a day of it and take lots of breaks

mt diablo is great for exercise- can do hours of climbing, but mostly just fire roads.  there are a handful of legal single track – Dan cook trail at the entrance of south gate being one of the more fun/accessible ones. some fun less legal single track.  but, by and large, do diablo for exercise/nice views.  diablo mud can be unridable in some areas after a rain.  can get super hot in the summer

close by, Joaquin Miller has some more advanced trails, nice and shady in the summer heat and handles the rain better.  poaching here is not as necessary and can be met with aggression- generally don’t.  small park overall

Tamarancho in marin is great.  totally worth the 45 min drive.

rockville is about 30 min away- fairfield.  great park- can find anything from easy fire roads to full double black.  climbs never too sustained.  not a huge park- just go explore, can’t get that lost.

skeggs- cool place to go.  redwoods.  different cool loops.  worth the hour ish drive.

    summertime- tahoe, downieville!!!!

mt diablo has great views, so worth the trip, but by and large is not great mountain biking.  long climbs followed by fire road descents.  there are a handful of legal single tracks that are ok.  Dan cook is a fun short single track towards the bottom (go down on the right, the left is not as fun).  Mothers is cool because of the great views and is quite steep, but otherwise non tech.  there is a longer single track off curry point which is fun, but drops you off way out towards livermore and is a long pedal home.  There are some more fun single track trails, but they are all illegal and i would not be able to describe how to find them.  this time of year the single track is also quite bad with poison oak and stinging nettle.   for the fire roads – wall point down dusty road to pine creek is a nice stretch which if ridden fast can be challenging and has some creek crossing at the end.  good luck!
