Wheel Set

I am interested in updating my 2011 Specialized Camber with new wheels and hubs. I have had several spokes break due to metal fatigue. I have been MT biking for 2 years, this upgrade will be my first (outside of brakes and tires). What is some basic info for wheel sets? I ride 100-150 miles per month with most of the time spent XC in the TN mountains. I would like to stay in the $300 range. Can my existing QR axles be transferred or do I want new ones? Basically, I am looking to arm myself with knowledge prior to going to my LBS. I trust the guys, but it is my money.
