Can’t help with rental but there are a number of trails listed on the site in Puerto Rico. Use the trail search function and choose Puerto Rico in the drop down box to the right. I know the rainforest they have there has decent mts and the terrain would be good for biking if someone was interested and able to put the time and effort into the area. Not sure if it’s closed off sto bikes ince its a national forest.

Also, gonna move the post to the Latin America forum so you will hopefully get so better responses.

I went to Puerto Rico on business some years ago and was walking through old San Juan when a group of muddy mountain bikers came through.

      1) I kicked myself for not researching some riding before I went there.
      2) There are several places that do guided MTB tours, which may be the way to go to make sure you get the most riding for the least research.

Ok, this is an old thread but wanted to give some info.

There is good mountain biking in PR although none in the tropical rainforest (El Yunque) mountain bikes are not allowed there except on the road which is all uphill (good workout though).

As for bike rental places, there are a few but they offer poor quality bikes (nothing trail worthy, mostly targeting families who want to bike with their kids) so you have the option of bringing your own bike thru the airline (pricey…I know)

The most easy to find trail close to the capital (San Juan, PR) would be in Cerro Gordo and it’s pretty well marked and not easy to get lost. Cerro Gordo drains well from the rains and it’s even rideable wet (I know…awful to bike it when it’s wet but nonetheless possible). One thing to consider though…if biking in Cerro Gordo I do not advice that you go there alone because some bike thefts have been reported or car break ins in order to steal bike equipment etc. (I am a girl and used to bike there alone…but I would always bring my pepper spray and plus…I am a local). The other one would be Monagas Park in Bayamon, PR which is about 25 min if there is no traffic from San Juan, PR. Monagas offers more intermediate-advance trails with downhills, drops, very rooty section but this park doesn’t drain well so if it has rained in the past days…its basically a mudfest.

There more bike trails around the island, feel free to contact me for questions or look into my past entries as I have reviewed almost all of them.

      Happy mountain biking!

Last time that I was in P.R. I looked into doing some mountain biking. Renting a good bike was next to impossible. Bringing my own +$2,000 bike without an armed guard or a large group was just asking to get it stolen.

I did bring my professional camera and rented a car. I hit some of the most gorgeous beaches in the world with my wife.

There’re few and far between bike rental places, most will only carry cruisers to hang around town.

Trails are all over the place, close to the metro area are the Cerro Gordo and Monagas park trails but the best ones are in the south west between Aguadilla and Cabo Rojo.

Check out the Rincon Mountain Bike Pro Shop. They also do guided tours! I will definetely have to check this place out next time I go down there.

I know this is an old thread, but I feel there’s new information to share.

About traveling with your bike, I have taken my bike with me from the DC to PR several times without any issues. I use Jetblue Airlines as they seem to be the most bike-friendly of all airlines. They only charge $50 each way to take your bike, but counts as one of your checked bags. With a 99lbs limit I included my bike gear and some basic tools in the bag.

You can get more info here: [url:1ek6hevq]http://help.jetblue.com/SRVS/CGI-BIN/webisapi.dll/,/?St=310,E=0000000000055963381,K=198,Sxi=5,Case=obj(2236)#s3[/url:1ek6hevq]

A tip to prevent theft or at least to help in recuperating anything that might get "lost" is to do a detailed inventory of the bag content with anything that can easily be taken. Then print it in large font and include a copy within the bag (front and center) as copy 1 of 2. This lets anyone checking the bag, which they will and leave you a nice TSA note, that you are actively keeping track of its content.

As far as renting capable MTBs goes, Rincon MTB Pro Shop on the west coast (as mentioned by other member here) is probably your best choice. I’ve been to this place and the owner "El Capitan" will take care of all your MTB needs, with very capable bikes for any MTB adventure you want to take on.

All his information can be found at his Facebook page here: [url:1ek6hevq]https://www.facebook.com/pages/Rincon-Mountain-Bike-Pro-Shop/109206923306?fref=ts[/url:1ek6hevq]

If you are on the metropolitan area (San Juan or closer to the East Coast) then you can rent a bike from "Rent-a-Bike." The owner, Santos, is also a very service-oriented person and an avid cyclist who understand the needs of other bikers. While this place seems more oriented towards road-cycling, they also have MTBs that could easily tackle many of the trails close to the area like: Los Pinchos in Salinas, Monte Brujo in Guayama, and Cerro Gordo in Dorado to name a few. Last year on a family trip to Los Pinchos, the owner Santos went out of his way to ensure we had a great time.

You can find his information here: [url:1ek6hevq]http://rentabikepr.bravesites.com/index[/url:1ek6hevq]
Also check out their FB page here: [url:1ek6hevq]https://www.facebook.com/RABPR?ref=br_tf[/url:1ek6hevq]

I hope this helps… I am heading there next week to have a great time again.
