I have a 2014 Kona Unit coming my way soon(very stoked!), and I’m curious about the gearing, having never ridden a ss mountain bike before. I consider myself an "advanced novice" to intermediate rider, currently riding a Giant Talon hardtail(650b). FWIW, if anyone is familiar with my area, I ride the trails and fire roads around La Canada and Pasadena CA mostly – Cherry Canyon, Arroyo behind JPL, El Prieto a bit, etc. Definitely some extended climbing here and there(and some walking!). I’m not a terribly strong climber, but I’m improving. I’m 54, pretty fit, and a pretty light little guy – 134lbs.
So, is the 32×18 that the Kona comes with stock a good starting place? Or would it be better to start at say 32×20 to ease in? I could have the shop set ‘er up that way right away before I even take delivery of it. How big a difference would I experience between the two anyway?
Eventually I intend to learn how to swap out the rear cog myself so I can experiment.
