my bike has a 1 1/8 fork and the fork I am looking at is tapered. Is there an adapter to put a tapered fork in a straight head tube?

You can put a straight in a tapered, but not a tapered in a straight.
Sorry to say, but it’s not going to happen.

I feel your pain on this. I have a bike with a straight steerer that I’d like replace the fork on. The choices have gotten limited. You might check on Ebay or Craigslist for a used decent fork. My problem there is I’m 6’4″ and its extremely hard to find a used fork that hasn’t had the steerer cut down. If you’re not as tall, you can find decent options going that route. With a used fork, you can always spend a little and get it rebuilt.
