For those of you who are not in physical condition to pedal mountain singletracks, or mountainous logging roads, do NOT attempt to ride these areas in anything but a pedal powered mountain bike,( or a dirt bike). The issue is too much weight and not enough horsepower. You might think that this is an obvious conclusion, but I occasionally see guys off the pavement with these heavy, under powered bicycles, and they always have that glazed look in their eyes and pushing the bike. I also just pedaled a portion of the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route in New Mexico, and with my camping gear the bike weighed 60 lbs!! Man!, try pedaling up a 16% grade with that weight!
