Converting 3x to 2x

I have a 3x shimano alivio crank set on the front. Want to go down to 2x. Do I need spacers in place of the third sprocket or can I just take it off, use the same bolts and go? I tried reading up on the subject but am getting different answers.

Outer ring goes  away, FD limit screw is adjusted to accommodate the 2X and eliminate overrun of the chain. Job done! Same can be done on the low side too.
