Camping rigs are seemingly more popular than ever among mountain bikers, and with good reason. Bedding down close to the trails maximizes ride time, and there are countless purpose-built and custom options available to choose from. We want to know how many riders own a rolling camp rig.

That little overland rig in the picture costs $60K. I sold my 2018 42' Grand Design Momentum toy hauler for $60K. Prices are in make believe land these days.

I second the prices in make believe land. 60k is just the start with licensing, maintenance, insurance, the rig and gas to haul it. $60k could get you airfare for 60 trips. It could easily get you 240 nights in hotels. It could get you a fleet of top notch MTN bikes. Let's assume you work to fund it all, you have 4 weeks of vacation a year and you spend all 28 days biking. Airfare for 5 years $20k, Hotels for 5 years $35k (assumes meals to), $5k for bikes and rentals for 5 years. I will stick to the Subaru, a cot, tent, and back of the car camping for my 350 to 400 mile radius, 3 to 4 day trips, a few times a year.

I bought a 2019 Transit, full-size, normal roof for 20k (108k miles), tricked it out for 5 more. Including bed frame that flips up, refrig/freeze, pizza oven, well-insulated, induction cook surface, full solar to run it all, even a heater when I need it (Nern Wisco, so can be cold for sure). Came with shelves and I removed them other than I swung one around that had locking drawers. Bunch of work, but hey, satisfaction over creating your best space. Figured it would be worth it if I used it every 3 weekends. Turns out I only didn't use it 3 times from April-Nov. When I go listen to music in a neighboring town. I no longer drive after drinking, I pull up to the start of gravel races the night before (saving the 4:30 wake-up call). So worth it.

BTW, this crazy tiny little typing window I'm working with here is ridiculous. Very difficult to edit and it could be 4 times the size, Sorry for the neg vibes.

Full size Chevy van and 26' Skyline. Bikes get in the van where they are safe and sound.
Annnnnd, no!! It was not 60k...
Perhaps if the combo was bought in today's market however, they were not bought in the year of the stupid pricing.

I have a minivan with a rooftop tent (Dometic TRT140, it is awesome). I also have a a twenty year old 23' travel trailer that I haul with a truck. What I use depends on the duration of the trip and whether my wife is coming along or not. I am happy to have a very spartan trip, but my wife likes more amenities. We camp for vacations even if it is not a bike trip, it is just the type of vacation we prefer.

Not van, nor tent, I'm going for the pop up truck bed camper. The best kind of 4x4 excursion with bike rack on behind. Cost around $20k on an expensive pickup.

We have a 2006 20' travel trailer that we bought for 6k. It looks a little rough on the outside but is pristine and perfect on the inside. My wife has made it quite nice and comfortable. So nice to have a warm shower and ice cream from the freezer after a hard ride.

We have a hitch welded on the back of the camping trailer to carry bikes. The trailer is self contained so we can be comfortable with many conveniences. Plus we can leave the trailer at the campsite and drive just the car to the trail heads, etc. So convenient!

We prefer a travel trailer. Sometimes we park around trailheads, but sometimes they are quite a ways away. It’s nice to unhook the truck and not have to break down anything to travel. Wife doesn’t bike so she can stay at camp while I go off. Several really nice model trailers are available for around $20,000, new or used. You just need to be able to tow it. It gives us the most flexibility.

I agree, we travel at least 12 weeks a year with a velocirax 6 on the trailer so we have enough bikes to ride whatever!

We've had many iterations of campers over the years, but we have finally settled on an inexpensive pop-up. Welded a tubular steel bumper directly to the frame, hitch receiver, weight distro hitch and we are good to go. I wouldn't take it Cross country or anything but within a few hours it's the optimal set up to stay a couple days and optimize ride times.

I have a Tacoma with a Superpacific wedge camper mounted up. Awesome setup for dirt bag camping on MTB road trips. It's been all over the western US and Canada.

I have a canopy camper on my Ram pickup. All my bikes and equipment kept inside and wedge tent on top. Perfect for 1-3 nights. Easy setup and take down and no trailers to deal with.

I'm confused by the "sometimes" in the tent option. "No, but I camp in a tent" would be better.

We bought a bare bones Ford Transit utility van in 2017. Put a van rug in, a fan, some cabinets we got for free from a contractor buddy and built a sleeping platform that the bikes fit under. In 2020 we did the Quigley 4x4 conversion. It's not a fancy camper van but it's been perfect for us, the dogs and the bikes. Dirtbag delight.

I’ve got a small trailer, basically a bed on wheels, that I use for solo trips. Also had a slightly larger NuCamp trailer with a few more amenities. My favorite was a rooftop tent that I got good mileage out of, until mid night descents became a bit dicey with age.
Currently looking at a camper van which I agree makes no sense financially, but I’m going to spend a portion of my kids inheritance! Cross country trip to PNW this summer!
