Until recently, it was nearly impossible to find a set of carbon mountain bike wheels priced at less than $2,000 for a pair. In fact, Singletracks reviewed multiple Reynolds Blacklabel wheelsets last year priced at $2,500 and up. But not everyone can justify spending that much money on a set of wheels, so Reynolds is rolling out an even more affordable line of carbon wheels than their TR S line, dubbed simply TR.
Looking at the offerings, Reynolds isn’t just cranking out rims using old molds whose costs were amortized long ago. Like the TR S line introduced late last year, the new TR line sports a wide range of internal rim widths ranging from 24mm up to 36mm to work with today’s larger tire sizes. In fact, the TR line uses the same rims as the TR S wheels.

So how did Reynolds manage to shave another $300 off the cost of carbon wheels in the span of just a year? For starters, like the TR S wheels, the TR wheels feature Reynolds-branded hubs, but feature fewer pawls (3 instead of 6) and reduced engagement (10 degrees instead of 5.) Weights for the new wheelsets appear to be fairly comparable to those in the TR S series, within 100g or so. The new TR wheels even feature the same lifetime warranty as pricier Reynolds wheels.
