Mountain Biking Train Tunnels

***   Add a review
#377 of 1,003 mountain bike trails in California
#4,499 in the world

I recommend that you bring a ligh as it can be extremely dark inside the tunnels. The trail goes all the way to Truckee, but if you do that I recommend that you leave a car there, because of all of the elevation you lost on the way down.

Getting there
Heading on eastbound I-80 exit at "Soda Springs Norden" and take a right on Donner Pass Rd. Continue past the flashing red light to the road going to the Judah side of Surgarbowl, there is a surgarbowl sign on the corner. Immediately takea right and you will see a tunnel go under the road. Thats the begining of the ride.

Some areas are pitch black and then next thing you know your riding thru a 1/2 foot deep puddle. Stop at any of the exits to see beautiful view of Donner Lake. Suggestion, take a light of some sort.

If you want this to be an epic ride, park at Donner Lake Interchange (just behind the gas stations next to the hotel) and ride the singletrack along the south side of Donner Lake Park. When the trail hits pavement continue along South Shore drive towards the West End of Donner Lake, about half way there is a forest service rd. that goes up Lakeview Canyon and to the historic townsite of Eder. At the top of this climb (short but steep) you will hit the old SP tracks which you can then ride the old rail bed and tunnels to the summit. Once there take the Lake Mary/Sugar Bowl singletrack/dirt road to Emigrant pass between Mt. Judah and Donner Peak. At this point there is the Coldstream Single track that will take you back down into Donner Lake Interchange. There are many hidden singletrack options off of this with historic value. Apolies for not being more specific, but mountain biking is about discovery-at least it used to be. Go to Paco's in Truckee and they can give you all you need to go on this ride (25 mile loop/intermediate thru advanced).

If you go out and back, the trail is totally flat. The views of Donner Lake and Truckee are amazing. The tunnels can stay wet and cold so it's a bit weird if you are riding without a light. Watch out for hikers and cars though.
