Mountain Biking Soper's Mill

***   Add a review
#49 of 94 mountain bike trails in Iowa
#6,443 in the world

Some singletrack, some doubletrack, some prairie (avoidable though). The
trail follows the river so it has some sand in spots. A large bridge links the
two sides. The west side is fairly wide and smooth while the east side is
narrower and steeper. The trail has a shallow creek crossing also. I'm not
sure if it gets much deeper than a few inches.
Recommended route: Take your second right and head up the hill. Once you
hit the grass trail, head left and jump back into the woods. Keep right and
go down the stairs and head across the bridge. Complete that loop then
head back across the bridge and finish out the loop back to the trail head.

east (right) on 170th St/Co Rd E23. Drive over the bridge, the trail head is

Out of Peterson Pits, McFarland Park, and Soper's Mill, this one is my favorite. It is harder to get to from Ames/the interstate and it is shorter, but I think it's more challenging than the others. If you're a beginner or have beginners with you and your looking for more of a challenge, this would be one place to go. Be careful on the stairs though, they can be a bit slick.
