Mountain Biking Sidewinder

****   Add a review
#24 of 316 mountain bike trails in Idaho
#2,394 in the world

The trail bobs and weaves for the first half mile, and then it starts to bounce
upward. The steepness of the climb is offset by the roll of the trail (i.e. every
steep uphill is preceded by a brief downhill). Eventually, the Sidewinder passes
through a gate and meets up with the motorcycle trail. The motorcycle route is
very loose and rocky (shale), but it does meet up with the rest of the Kelly
Canyon trail network at the summit of Kelly Mountain. Ride safe!

Getting there
Follow directions toward Kelly Canyon Ski Resort/Heise Hot Springs. After you
pass the hot springs, the golf course and then the red barn, turn right onto East
Heise Road. Follow the road until you reach a public parking area with trailhead
signs for Stinking Springs. There is a spring-loaded brown metal gate across the
dirt road from the parking area where the Sidewinder begins. (It's not the dirt
bike route.)

Rider questions

Q: What's the parking like?
A: Parking is located at Camelsback park or Military Reserve. Its a bit of a climb and traverse either way to get to Sidewinder, although one climb is much steeper and shorter than the other.

A very fun trail in Boise but whoever wrote this article about it does not know what they are talking about. Heise Idaho? What? This is in Boise Idaho. Heise is over in SE Idaho (300 miles away). Also, Kelley Mountain? Nobody would ride this trail that far over into Central Idaho (180 miles away). . This review of this trail will just confuse people about what Sidwinder trail consists of. MTB Project website has an accurate description of what this trail is and where its at. Its just a very chill ride that can literally be started from downtown Boise. Its very flowy and not technical at all and you will get a great view of Boise. It connects to a couple other good trails if you want to extend the ride.

Can be done as a shuttle ride. Start at Y Junction, go up a 4x4 trail for about 1 Mike to the summit of Kelly Mountain then down a decent 2 mile stretch of 4x4/dirt bike trail that connects with the top of Sidewinder. Sidewinder itself was a great 3 mile section of singletrack! I'Lloyd be back for sure!

This is an awesome trail! The name makes sense after riding it! Lots of tight corners on banked single track. I did it as a shuttle so I started at Y Junction just above Kelly Canyon Ski area then finished at Stinking Springs. I'll be back for sure!

This is the first single track I've done and I stayed in 1, 2, and 3rd gear most of the way to the top so it's a workout but going back is all downhill so its worth the climb. There are two bench stops towards the end that are good places to stop.
