Mountain Biking Secesh River Trail #80

****   Add a review
#53 of 316 mountain bike trails in Idaho
#4,215 in the world

The Secesh River Trail is 14.3 miles long. This scenic and pleasant hike rises 1500 feet from north of Ponderosa Campground to Chinook Campground. The trail crosses several small streams as it meanders along the bends and curves of the Sesech River, sometimes near the banks and sometimes 50 feet above. The trail can be wide enough for two people to walk side by side, but in other places it hugs the cliffs barely more than a goat's width. 5 miles from the north end of the trail is the Loon Creek Trail #084 junction, which takes trail users past Loon Lake. A pleasant shorter trip is the 3.5 mile walk from Chinook Campground to the suspension bridge that crosses the Sesech River. There are horse facilities at both ends of the trail. The trail is open to the following uses: Hiking, Mountain Biking, Horseback Riding, Motorcycle Trail Riding. source: fs.usda.gov

Getting there
To reach the southern end of the trail, take Lick Creek Road east from McCall. Drive over Lick Creek Summit and through the canyon. With its rock falls, hanging valleys and waterfalls, this canyon is one of the most picturesque drives on the forest. The trailhead is located just across the road from Ponderosa Campground, by the Sesech Bridge.

Beautiful trail that closely parallels the Secesh River. There are no big climbs but there are a few short, intense ones. The trail is mostly pretty buff, so you can ogle the gorgeous river gorge, but there are a few rocky spots and occasional exposure where some caution is warranted. This makes a great loop with Loon Lake.
