Mountain Biking Rainbow Trail: Hwy 285 to Methodist Mountain Thd

****   Add a review
#626 of 1,353 mountain bike trails in Colorado
#6,431 in the world

The Rainbow Trail runs for 10 miles from the junction with Highway 285 to the Methodist Mountain trailhead. The first several miles of this section are a steep hike-a-bike climb up the ridge, followed by some additional difficult trail. However, once dropping down the gulch and making the turn (passing the descent to the Little Rainbow Trail Extension), the trail becomes much more singletrack-esque and spends significant time sidehilling.

I rode the other section of this segment this weekend for the first time, and Man is it heinously steep, loose, and rutted out! Sure, the views are spectacular, and when you're going downhill it's pure awesome, but overall the segment between Hwy 285 and Sand Gulch just isn't much fun. However, the other half of this segment, between Sand Gulch and the Methodist Mountain Road, is superb. If I could give this a 3.5, I would, but a 3 star and a 4 star review should accomplish the same thing ;)

The section between the Methodist Mountain Trailhead and the descent to the Little Rainbow Trail Extension is fantastic, but much of the other part of this segment is steep and rutted out.
