Mountain Biking Pura Vida Ride - Las Catalinas

****   Add a review
#3 of 16 mountain bike trails in Costa Rica
#2,540 in the world

Fantastic intermediate - advanced single track trail with some stunning ocean views. Few Costa Ricans have carved it into a hill/mountain by hands in last 4 years. Several wooden bridges and 180 turns make it great fun to ride. There are no hard climbs neither there are crazy downhills. What makes this trail intermediate is the fact, that there is no railing along the track and one mistake can send you down from a really steep hill right into the bushes ;-). Come and check it out, it is worth it!

Getting there
Since there are no addresses in Costa Rica, you'd best to go to Potrero and ask some locals or expats for directions to Danta Beach. It is only 10 minute drive and once you arrive here, look for Pura Vida Ride.

Great everyday ride. Hot in dry season, wet in green season, and the in-between months have perfect conditions. Not too climby, but there are some good climbs. Great ocean views! Not too technical as the trails are maintained for tourist activity, so, great all around trail riding in Costa Rica. I would recommend for any level - beginners may struggle with some of the climbs, but no worries. A few cliffs to be careful of. Advanced riders will love to tear it up and explore the views from one beach (Danta) up and over to another hidden beach (Zapotal). the trails have been expanded now, as of 2017, you can do about 22-24km of trail loop and about 27km if you add in some dirt road to Zapotal beach. 1-1/2 to 2 hrs of moving time is the average ride to explore most or all of it, depending on skill level. - [mtbsickness.com]

This was a good ride, I did the longer loop which took 2 1/2 hours. as an advanced - intermediate rider it was pretty straight forward with a few strenuous climbs. Humidity was challenging but once you get back under tree cover it was fine. I rented my bike for Pura Vida who have top class bikes.

My son and I went two times to the trails and loved both times. The main trails close to rental shop and beach are really nice, single track, fairly easy. If you want to add difficulty go to the back side, on our second day we rode closer to 18 K and the back end trails are more difficult. Good climbs, all mountain, and very Lush terrain.
Bring lots of water if you are going mid day, it is very dry and hot.
Pura Vida Bike rentals are great, very nice people, and very helpful.
I rated it a 4 for where it is, its not BC, or MOAB, or Bromont, However for Costa rica its a Good course

Amazing views of playa danta and islands in the cove from this trail! It was hot and dry but we saw monkeys and pezotes! My fiance is expert mountain biker and it was only my third trail ever- but we both had fun! I walked the bike a little bit but was able to ride most of the way. Jake and amy at pura vida ride were kind and informative. All in all pretty fun :-)

My wife and I live in Atlanta and ride all over North Georgia and Western NC. We wanted to ride while we were on vacation in Costa Rica and so we took a day trip out to Las Catalinas on our last day. Its only about 1.5 hrs from Liberia (using some dirt roads). We were not disappointed in what we found there. The rental bikes at Pura Vide Ride were decent - I rode a 29er hard tail Kona - and the people were nice and helpful (and spoke perfect English for anyone concerned). The trails are well planned and maintained. Much like the mountain biking in our neck of the woods, they have lots up twists, turns, creek crossings (although it was very dry at the time) and dips, etc. Less rooty then what we typically ride, and the ocean views are amazing! One of the owners told me they are working on adding another 5K worth of trails, which would be great. They currently have about 10K, which was plenty given how hot it was. I'd recommend starting early in the morning if you can. They are right on Danta beach and so you can surf, boogie board, paddle board, etc if you have the time and energy. Overall, it was great and we plan on going again sometime. -Hutch
